Happy Diwali to all who choose to celebrate!
Diwali can be celebrated religiously or culturally, it's a celebration of joy, hope and togetherness - feelings that no religion, group of people or culture has a monopoly on.
On this day we give thanks to Mother Nature for the bounty of the harvest she's blessed us with. We cook an abundance of different dishes and share with our friends, neighbours, loved ones, and those less fortunate than us. - this reminds us that no matter your status or stature in life, food is the humble bond that ties us all together.
We offer sweet treats and gifts to children because sugar represents prosperity, and with that abundance we celebrate children and their innocent joy and exuberance. - this reminds us to focus in on feeding our inner personal joy no matter what the outer world presents to you.
We light lamps, called diyas (little earthen pots), a most humble little light with some oil (coconut or ghee preferred) and a little cotton wick at night, after the sun has gone down.
This diya represents enlightenment in the face of ignorance, a path of hope when you feel you're stuck in a tunnel of despair. It symbolizes joy and unity in the face of separation and exclusiveness.
On a deeper level, the flame of the diya the presence of the Divine Light — the eternal, unchanging truth within all of us. It symbolizes purity, consciousness, transformation, and divine love.
When we wave it around in circles we are encircling ourselves in that sacred vibration — the energy of light, love, and protection.
Diwali is a time to set free all that no longer supports your current state of joy. Whatever has held you back from living in your personal greatness, this is the time to shed it. From today adopt the energy of true love for the self and self-worth, and start acting on it.
If you're not a Hindu and would like to celebrate this joyous occasion here's a simple way you can do it -
- if there is an Indian grocery near you, go buy 5 diyas, rinse them off, add your cotton wick and the oil, then say a little blessing for the protection of your home and loved ones, and safely place them around your house. **you may use candles as an alternative, just be careful where you place them.
- share a sweet treat with your friends and or neighbours
- send out a prayer or blessing to the world for enlightened collective consciousness - joy, unity, love, equality and prosperity for all.
- say a fervent prayer or blessing for yourself to let go of the past, forgive those who have hurt you, including yourself - knowingly and unknowingly, and make a pact to embrace your natural state of living, in joy, gratitude, love and bliss.
To all who choose to celebrate Diwali in whatever way enhances your joy, I wish you vibrant strong health and a constant flow of prosperity in all areas of your life.
always sending you love + joy,
Happy Diwali!
