Starline Equine Bodywork podcasts are worth a listen for both bodyworkers and equine owners. This episode in particular shares how effective chiropractic care can be in conjunction with other types of equine body work.
“Hilton's law states: Articular nerves supplying a joint are branches of the nerves that supply the muscles responsible for moving that joint. Hence irritation of articular nerves causes a reflex spasm of the muscles which position the joint for the greatest comfort. These nerves also supply the overlying skin, providing a mechanism for referred pain from joint to skin.” (Physio-pedia.com)
This means that massage CANNOT solve muscle tension until underlying joint dysfunction is resolved. Chiropractic care is important for resolving muscle tension.
As a soft tissue practitioner myself, I often refer to and recommend chiropractic care for chronic muscle tension. And, it’s been a very successful way of providing best outcomes for client horses through this collaborative care.
Knowing what type of bodywork to use (when and why) is the key to best outcomes for the horses.
