We know February wraps up on Friday, but our Flashback fun continues through the weekend!

The Prince Edward Historical Society hosts a double feature at Macaulay Church (23 Church Street, Picton) on Saturday, March 1st.

At 11am, join Sandra Latchford, President of Glenwood Cemetery, as she presents a follow-up to last year's popular talk on the Future of Cemeteries. You'll hear about new burial and memorializing options available at Glenwood and beyond, as well as an exciting new program for documenting grave sites that the public can access online.

From 12:15-1:15pm, enjoy a luncheon featuring traditional funerary foods from the 1950's through 1990's. Think finger sandwiches and squares galore!

At 1:30pm, Thomas Harrison will speak to (and officially launch) his book, "Searching for Richard Nixon: Finding Refuge and Making a Home in Prince Edward County". The book sheds new light on Nixonโ€™s brief visit to Picton in 1957 - and includes plenty of delightful County anecdotes!

A $10 ticket includes both talks and lunch. To register, visit https://www.ticketscene.ca/events/50846/

*Note* Attending both talks is not mandatory. If you would like to attend one talk only and forego lunch, a donation can be made at the door instead of booking online. Questions? Contact Jessica Chase at jchase@pecounty.on.ca.

Why is a cemetery sponsoring a free movie?

Good question! Your Glenwood Cemetery is a community space, a resource, and a service to so many people today and for generations. We truly appreciate all of the support we get from our kind and generous neighbours, and this is a small way to give back during the holidays.

We understand how valuable a free, family-friendly event can be for making lasting memories and bringing people together, especially during the holidays. It makes us so happy to see people coming together, laughing, and celebrating. These are the sort of memories we know can last a lifetime, and in times of grief and loss they can be so helpful to hold on to.

Please come on out on Sunday Dec. 22nd at 2:00pm to see a FREE community screening of How The Grinch Stole Christmas (2000, starring Jim Carrey). All are welcome. Share with a friend, family, co-workers and a local PEC Facebook Group or two.

An update for the community about Glenwood's Chapel:

The Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery will remain closed to the public, and its stained glass windows will be removed this week for preservation and temporary storage after the discovery of structural deficiencies in the building. The historic designated heritage building, constructed in 1901, will require remediation to its foundation, as well as aspects of the interior of the building.

Sandy Latchford, Chair of the Board of Directors, says that engineering firm J.T. Donald Consultants Ltd. was retained to conduct a geotechnical investigation at the site.

"The results are troubling," Latchford says. "The rubble stone foundation is sitting on loose, unstable fill soils, and inadequate drainage is creating issues with the integrity of the building. The Board has decided to have the stained glass windows removed and safely stored while we evaluate the best course of action."

The stained glass windows are unusual in that they were commissioned by several fraternal organizations including the Independent Order of Foresters and the Freemasons. In 2023, Picton author, stained glass expert and Member of the Order of Canada Sarah Hall published a book titled "Secret Societies and Their Stained Glass" about the windows and the symbolism contained within them.

The window openings will be temporarily covered with plywood, and local arts organization The Department of illumination are partnering with Glenwood to paint the wooden placeholders in creative ways that honour the space.

"The windows are truly treasures of local heritage," Latchford continued. "It's imperative we keep them safe while inspections and work proceed."

Glenwood Cemetery, established in 1873 in the heart of Picton, is the resting place of 15,000 people throughout its 62 acres of rolling hills. It is a registered charity managed by a volunteer Board of Directors.

Notice to Community:
Temporary Closure of Glenwoodโ€™s Stone Chapel

It was recently brought to our attention that water was building up on the east wall of Glenwoodโ€™s historic Stone Chapel and causing damage to the structure.

As soon as weather conditions allow, engineers will be investigating the issue so that appropriate repairs can be planned.

As an abundance of caution, the Chapel will be closed to the public until further notice and we are accommodating previously planned events in any way we can.

Glenwood Chapel was erected in 1901, and is a designated historic building.

If you would like to contribute to the ongoing care, maintenance and repairs of the Stone Chapel and all aspects of Glenwood Cemetery, we encourage you to make your tax-deductible gift at glenwoodcemetery.ca/donate.

Glenwood Cemetery is a registered charity that relies largely on the generosity of our community to operate, maintain and preserve this meaningful County space.
