SPRAINS, STRAINS, FRACTURES, and DISLOCATIONS ☠️ If you fracture a bone it will heal pretty well as long as it is fixed in place correctly. Bone tissue heals using calcium and other minerals drawn from the body in a process that creates a bond as strong as the original bone structure.

Treating soft tissue injuries however can be a little trickier. Your muscles, tendons and ligaments do not heal as efficiently as bone – essentially building what is known as ‘scar tissue’ to heal the wound. The problem with scar tissue is that it is weaker and generally less flexible than the original tissue leaving the area more susceptible to further injury.

Unless correctly diagnosed and managed, soft tissue injuries can lead to reoccurring problems, pain and reduced movement in the injured area. While painkillers and anti-inflammatories can help manage the pain and reduce symptoms they are not addressing the actual cause of the injury.

Seeking out the professional advice of an Osteopath who is specifically trained in how the body’s musculoskeletal system works together as a whole, is a good way to actually address the root cause of the issue and get some of the much-needed movement back into the area as it heals.

An Osteopath can help with injuries that have not fully healed post-surgery, ongoing injuries that never seem to go away, soft tissue damage after breaking a bone, in -act all kinds of injuries’ from any sports and fitness activities such as skateboarding, roller skating, mountain biking, horse riding, football, soccer, running, cycling, hockey, dancing and many more.

Osteopathy can help post-concussion syndrome by implementing cranial osteopathy. This specific and delicate therapy focuses on softening up tissues around the base of the skull, releasing tension and improving circulation. A skilled osteopath may also choose to manipulate areas above the neck such as the ears, head and mouth in an effort to increase neurological activity by restoring cerebrospinal fluid flow. This is especially important post-brain injury because this liquid is responsible for carrying nutrition to the brain which can repair the damage and reverse inflammation.

Vertigo: BPPV and how osteopathy can help

If you’ve ever experienced vertigo, chances are you’d agree that this condition, which brings on a sudden attack of dizziness, is pretty awful. When you’ve got vertigo, you can feel like you or objects around you are moving when they are not. Vertigo can be quite debilitating, given that you can’t really do much other than lay down when the world is spinning around you.

Vertigo can be caused by a number of different things, from viruses to medications, structures in your neck (such as nerves, blood vessels) and inner ear issues.

Vertigo that is brought on by issues with the inner ear is known as peripheral vertigo and it’s most common cause is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). BPPV is a result of tiny crystals breaking loose in the inner ear, which fall into the wrong part of the ears vestibular (balance) system, stimulating the nerves that pick up rotation of the head. The brain then thinks that the head is spinning even though there’s only been a slight movement. An episode of BPPV can make you feel as though you are turning around when you are in fact standing still.

Fortunately for vertigo sufferers, your osteopath can help alleviate the symptoms of BPPV related vertigo. Restore the equilibrium!

Massage Therapy; there is always more to learn.

Registered Massage Therapist. I strive to provide thorough, optimal services. I specialize in pregnancy massage, induction massage, sports massage, chronic injury massage, cupping therapy, gua sha and hot stone massage.

The great thing about being a Massage Therapist is that everyday is a new learning opportunity. Whether it be a new article I read, a new technique, a new course or simply learning something new about my client. I am always absorbing information, storing it and saving it for future use or reference. I was fortunate enough to be able to finally take my cupping course this week. After time away from the health industry to raise my babies, I was a bit behind on the times when I came back. I was skeptical of cupping therapy and figured it was just the latest fad. I brushed it off and decided I wouldn’t take the course and stick to the basics. Provide great quality massage with my hands. After a year back in the business I noticed my hands were taking the toll from many deep tissue massages in a day. Thats when I started to do my research on cupping therapy and its benefits. After reading the information I was intrigued and very interested to see what the course could offer me. I am very happy to report that the benefits for clients and massage therapists is amazing. As massage therapists we get to save our hands and extend the longevity of our careers by incorporating the cups to do the heavy lifting. 5 minutes of cupping is equivalent to 30 minutes of a deep tissue massage. Wow! The list of benefits is endless, fascia release, adhesion release, softening cellulite, firming skin, PNF, stretching and pain and tension relief. I am thrilled I took this course and very excited to add cupping to my everyday practice. In the words of my wonderful grandma; learn something new everyday always learning something new! Wisdom is always knocking and we need to answer and accept! (My grammar police didn’t proof read this and “de-fluff it”, my grammar is not my strong suit) My sister may cringe at the sight of my errors lol sorry!
