Have you noticed that you are experiencing joint pain?
It may not be “just age!”
In women, muscle and joint pain is 2 times as common around the menopause transition when compared to women, at the same age, who are still cycling regularly.
That’s right! your joint pain can be another symptom of the dramatic drop in estrogen experienced in menopause.
Estrogen affects the joints, muscles and tendons directly.
Estrogen is also anti-inflammatory, so when it drops our joints lose this added protection.
Estrogen also impacts pain tolerance so when estrogen drops we are potentially more sensitive to pain.
The drop-in estrogen or the fluctuation that happens in perimenopause can also lead to anxiety, sleep disturbances, stress, and increased BMI, all of which can indirectly increase muscle and joint pain.
If your period frequency has started to change and you are noticing increased joint and muscle pain you should be assessed. Though menopause can be to blame, there are other causes of pain that are also more common between the ages of 45 and 55.
Regardless of the cause, this is the time when you should have a health plan that is focused on keeping you healthy and mobile as you age. Let’s work on your health plan together! Head to the link in bio to book an appointment.
