Although I personally believe physiological home birth is incredibly safe and far less complicated. Not to mention it is the simplest way for her to achieve a ceremonial rite of passage that helps her reclaim full body sovereignty and autonomy…

I’ve learned that some women truly feel more safe birthing their babies in a hospital and that is okay. Sometimes a woman will plan a home birth and all of a sudden her intuition fires and she feels like medical intervention is needed. Her doula/partner’s role in these moments is to hold space and listen to her mental process without placing judgement. We allow her to move through this decision in between sensations and we outweigh the benefits and the risks. Often times her intuition is right and the baby or her physical body required advanced medical support.

We mustn’t question the spiritual downloads she is receiving while giving birth. The messages she is receiving in her mind are unique to this woman’s karmic path and contract she has between her and her baby. Each roadblock she encounters is necessary in order for her to peel back the layers of her unique birthing process. Perhaps her subconscious mind believes hospital birth is better but her ego is driving her desire for a home birth. We just won’t know this until we’re in the birthing process. All truths are revealed in birth.

Her head space and confidence during birth depends on the material she’s read, watched, and listened to while pregnant. The rest is up to the universe and the wisdom of her innate birthing capabilities.

We cannot predict what a woman needs in order to fully surrender. We can only encourage her to discover the most empowered outcome.

What’s important to acknowledge is how she FEELS when making her decisions. If she decides halfway through her birthing that she needs pain management or is afraid for baby’s health immediately postpartum that is okay. As long as the decision to transfer from home to hospital is coming from a place of POWER and not from the medwives coercive behaviours. A good birth team will give her the time and space to find her way without indoctrinating her. Continue in comments…

Kathy’s birth happened early on in my career and it taught me the power of a crucial technique. It also taught me the importance of doulas in the birth space.

After a beautiful early labour at home and what seemed to be seamless active stage, the OB came into Kathy’s room, assessed the baby and said “well your baby is transverse and you’ve got 30 minutes to figure it out or else we’re calling for a cesarean.”

It was disheartening to the family and his abrupt behaviour really shocked me. I remember calling my mentor at the time and explained the situation. She said “well have you tried shaking her apples?” ✨💡✨Ahh yes! How could I have forgotten?!

I grabbed my rebozo and shook her hips. The father and I took turns and surely after 30 minutes the OB came back to assess Kathy. He noticed baby was head down and in optimal fetal position… he said “well I’ve never seen that maneuver before - good work.”

Baby was born soon thereafter and all was well.

Birth requires patience, creativity, TRUST and positivity from all attendants. This was one of the first of many births where I would realize they mustn’t teach those values to OB/GYN’s. Good thing doulas hold these values high!

Birth is not a pathological event. Birth is wise and innate.

Ode To Birth is expanding and it’s very exciting !! This winter I’m bringing together a team of postpartum doulas to help me out so that you’re well taken care of in the fourth trimester.

More and more women are feeling the call to birth their babies at home. Physiological birth is what I’m here for… it’s what heals humanity.

We are not machines - we are mammals. Birth is a sacred rite of passage not a pathologic dis-ease.

I pray all women remember birth to be one of the most empowering and transcendent ceremonies.

Ode To Birth’s Village Gatherings are what women deserve and these evenings are necessary at this time. There will be plenty of tea, snacks, tears, laughs, and wisdom to go around. Each month a new topic will be the focus, but we will work in the present moment meeting the individual needs of whoever attends.

I changed the name from Village Prenatal —> Village Gatherings since so many of the maidens who were pregnant birthed and now we have an amazing little community of postpartum mothers. I love them so so much 🥹

An Ode To The Matriarch…

My grandmother was a queen. She was rich with life experience and wealthy in recipes that soothed her children and their children’s children.

My grandmother was straight forward, honest and loving. She taught us about class and how to pursue our dreams. She taught us how to smile through life’s grief.

My grandmother was the epitome of resiliency. Every breath of hers was devoted to maintaining a comfortable home for her children and their children to learn, laugh, and play.

My fondest memories as a child involve my grandmother’s presence.

My grandmother had a peaceful, grounded energy and a way with the flower kingdom. We spent many hours in comfortable silence, tending to her roses and baking scrumptious treats.

My grandmother was the one to stare into my newborn eyes and pronounce to my family, “she’s been here before.” My grandmother was one of my greatest role models.

Our Matriarch, Charleen Margaret Lynn, gently left this planet surrounded by family and her great grandchildren on September 27th, 2022.

I felt my bones quake and noticed my heart sink deeper into my chest shortly after she took her final breath. We all knew this moment would come, grandma prepared us gently, with style and grace.

I sat by the river and mourned her spirit. Once I felt empty from grief, I lifted my chin to the sky and whispered, “Grandma, thank you for this life.” I saw Cayden wrap his arm around her and grandpa gave me a wink.

May Our Matriarch Rest In Peace 🙏🏼

Hot topic: TONGUE TIES.. Is it just me or does it seem like every child has a tongue/lip tie? How do we distinguish if our child truly has a tie? Do we really need to “top up” with formula if our baby isn’t back to birth weight one week after birth? How do we avoid feeling stressed out about all of this when we’re sleep deprived? 😅😩😤

Choosing your birth team and environment:

What I love most about home birth is how the birthing woman is given the space to find an incredible amount of strength and resilience.

Doctors, nurses, lab staff, paediatricians, medwives, clerks, residents, students, white walls and bright lights are intimidating to a woman in her birthing time. Her sphincters are surely going to tighten and her mind will face a lot of trouble in order to birth her baby on a maternity ward.

Unless if you’re facing an anomaly risk factor or an emergent situation, the hospital is not a conducive environment to birth a baby.

Every mammal on earth wants a quiet, dark, and familiar environment to birth their young. Humans are mammals. We are designed to birth in a cozy environment.

If you want to birth in a home environment I encourage you to pick your birth attendants wisely.

Has everyone on your birth team seen physiologic birth? Are they aware you will travel through the astral realms? Can they hold space for you as you and exit time and space? Will they reassure you through this process without the use of metal instruments and synthetic drugs? Do you love them?

You will be naked. You will be raw. You will experience every emotion possible. You will become God. Do they feel honoured to witness this?
