Common misconception: people with darker skin types cannot get laser hair removal.
Fact: fake “lasers” like intense pulsed light (IPL) systems are not safe or effective for darker skin tones.

The science ⬇️
In summary, medical-grade lasers create highly concentrated beams of light (think laser beam). These beams of light can be set to a particular wavlength (755 nm or 1064 nm) which allows the laser to target specific structures. Due to this, real lasers have the ability to supply enough energy to target and injure the root of the hair while protecting (or ignoring) surrounding structures (like your skin).
IPL systems on the on the other hand, flash a broad spectrum of light that travels in many different directions. This causes the energy to be absorded by anything in in its path that has melanin (the pigment found in our hair and skin). In other words, IPL systems cannot tell the difference between the pigmentation in the hair and pigmentation in the skin which leads to less absorption of light energy in the hair and more absorption of light energy in the skin.
When light energy is absorbed into the skin, the treatment becomes innefective for hair removal and places you at risk of adverse reactions (blistering, pigmentary change, etc.).
