When a baby is born, we assume that because they have eyes, they can see. The truth is, vision is developed over time.
When a child is born, their ability to focus on images only extends about 6 to 10 inches, which is about the distance from the parents’ arms to their face. During this time, their retinas are developing due to light stimulation.
At about one-month old, the child may start looking at high contrast or brightly coloured targets a little further away from them, usually up to 3 feet away.
By three-months old, the child should be following objects that move around them with their eyes, and start to develop eye-hand coordination by reaching to items or toys that are in front of them.
At 4-months old, the child should have clearer vision and really be working on their depth-perception, by reaching and grabbing at toys and things that are near them.
By 6-months old the child should be able to recognize the face of their parent across the room.
