From — Doctors tell us that they receive several requests a day for referrals to see physiotherapists, massage therapists, or chiropractors.

You likely don’t need one.

Help free up doctors’ time by heading straight to the allied health professional.

June is ALS month. Thinking of my grandmother ❤️

What is ALS?

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, is a neurodegenerative disease also known as Motor Neuron Disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. It targets motor neurons, crucial for transmitting messages to voluntary muscles like arms and legs. While 90% of cases arise sporadically, 5-10% are inherited. Approximately 6-8 out of every 100,000 people are diagnosed with ALS.

Physiotherapists support ALS patients with treatments and equipment for comfort, breathing, mobility, and communication. In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including ALS Clinic experts, they help guide decisions on interventions and equipment, ensuring tailored care to enhance quality of life amidst the challenges of the disease.

Visit the ALS society of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia website at https://alsnbns.ca/en/ for more information, resources and descriptions of their services offered including support groups and the equipment loan program.

May is National Physiotherapy Month!

May is National Physiotherapy Month!

We want to take a moment to celebrate and thank the over 27,000 registered physiotherapists who work across Canada.

WHAT IS A PHYSIOTHERAPIST?

Physiotherapists are primary health care professionals that play a key role in health promotion and the treatment of injury and disease.

Physiotherapists combine their in-depth knowledge of the body and how it works with specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury or disability. All physiotherapists registered to practice in Canada are qualified to provide safe and effective physiotherapy treatment.

-
WHAT DO PHYSIOTHERAPISTS DO AND WHERE DO THEY WORK?

A physiotherapist’s goal is to get you moving. That means getting you to a place where you can be at your best functional capacity, maintaining that and then helping you to prevent future injuries.

They work in private clinics, general and rehabilitation hospitals, community health centres, residential care and assisted living facilities, home visit agencies, workplaces, and schools.

Physiotherapists work in all kinds of different areas, including orthopedics, pediatrics, pelvic health, neuro rehabilitation, cardiorespiratory rehabilitation, geriatrics, sports and more!

-
This year, the focus of National Physiotherapy Month is scope of practice. An excellent example of physiotherapists being able to work to their full scope of practice is the advocacy work by the NSPA around physiotherapists across the province being able to order x-rays for their patients.

It’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month!

It’s Parkinson’s Awareness Month!

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month!
The Parkinson Canada website (www.parkinsons.ca) has a lot of great downloadable information about ways to promote a healthy lifestyle including exercise suggestions. They suggest to stay active because "exercise can maintain flexibility of joints, muscle strength, improve circulation to the heart and lungs and aid digestion. Exercise in combination with good drug therapy can help a person to remain active and enhance the quality of life. Safety, joint protection and balance are important considerations when exercising. People with Parkinson's can benefit from an assessment by a physiotherapist as a way of identifying and treating specific areas of the body where weakness or stiffness is a concern. ” (www.parkinsons.ca)
