❗️BREAKING NEWS❗️

A new study published in Nature reveals abnormally high levels of the hormone, GDF15, and increased sensitivity to it, are the major factors contributing to HG.

Dr. Marlena Fejzo, Hyperemesis Education and Research (HER) Foundation Research Advisor and Board Member, and her team previously identified three independent genetic variants in GDF15, all of which strongly increase the risk of developing HG. GDF15 is known to cause nausea, vomiting, and appetite and taste changes.
The new study, first-authored by HER Foundation’s Dr. Fejzo and co-authored by HER’s Executive Director Kimber MacGibbon, was led by Dr. Stephen O’Rahilly at the University of Cambridge and includes an international team of researchers.

The work suggests that, in the future, HG may be prevented by raising GDF15 levels prior to pregnancy using a priming strategy. The study also provides the first suggestive evidence that an interaction between maternal and fetal genes plays a role in recurrence risk. However, larger studies are needed to confirm this.

Dr. Marlena Fejzo lost her baby due to the pregnancy complication, hyperemesis gravidarum, in 1999 and has been researching the cause ever since. “While I have worked, people have continued to contact the HER Foundation with heartbreaking stories like my own, begging for answers. I think we finally have the solution.”

When you are able to hold off the fuss over mom and baby as much as possible and keep the two together within the first hour after birth nature is allowed to take its course.

"The Golden Hour"is a crucial time for mama and baby.

In each of their precious bodies, massive shifts are taking place as they adjust to life's new transition. Two separate creatures within learning to be one without. An every day miracle.

💁🏽‍♀️What do you see happening?
I see:

🌸1st latch: establishing bond of trust, familiarity and nourishment. Surges of oxytocin constracting mom's uterus. Protecting against hemorrhage.

🌸Vernix Caseosa: the white sticky substance lubricating that new skin (Don't wash it momma, RUB IT IN)

🌸Gentle colonization of microorganisms which help baby adjust to the outside environment.

🌸Body temperature regulation, which babies in the beginning can have a hard time doing.

🌸 Trust developing, as the two new beings birthed through this process get to know eachother.

So much more takes place when you are able to allow yourself this special time.

For all the new parents

100% these positions should be used !!

Visual learners, this is for you!

Remaining upright (not reclining on your back) + leaning forward helps to reduce pressure and allows your baby's head to bear down on your cervix.

That may sound intimidating, but it decreases pain from contractions and can result in quicker dilation! 👶🏽

100% the greatest position ❤

100% the greatest position ❤

DILATION STATION! 💯

Aka the "Get it done position." 💪🏽 Most of my clients know that I love using the toilet for labor. It's the best way to release a pelvic floor and help a baby descend into the pelvis. The contractions are super intense on the potty, but that's because they are super productive! Trust me when I tell you, this is one of the all time best labor positions!

🚽you are naturally prone to relaxing your pelvic floor and perineum while sitting on the toilet.
🚽the bathroom is a place of privacy and solitude and you are used to relaxing in this room.
🚽you are using gravity
🚽you are opening your pelvis.
🚽you are allowing your baby lots of room to rotate and navigate the birth canal.
🚽you can also turn around and straddle the toilet with a pillow in front of you for comfort.

I call it the “dilation station” for a reason. I’ve encouraged many mommies to spend some time laboring on the toilet. It’s not uncommon for baby to come rather quickly after that 🤗

The closure of a large infant formula manufacturing plant has resulted in a global shortage of infant formula.

Amino acid-based formulas are vital for babies who are at risk of very serious food allergies (anaphylactic) reactions. It is critical that these products be prescribed only for babies who need them.

For guidance on other alternatives, speak to your health care practitioner.
