Happy Wellness Wednesday! 🩵 let’s chat about the vagus nerve ⬇️
The vagus nerve is the main nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system. When it’s active, your body shifts out of stress mode and into a calmer, recovery state. You can stimulate it indirectly through breathing, movement, and sensory inputs that increase vagal tone (how effectively it works)🌬️
When the vagus nerve is active, heart rate slows, blood pressure drops, digestion improves, and inflammation decreases. Mentally, you tend to feel calmer, safer, and more socially connected. Over time, stronger vagal tone is linked with better stress resilience, improved mood, fewer anxiety symptoms, better sleep, steadier blood sugar, and healthier gut function🧠🧘
Humming, singing, chanting, or laughing can stimulate it because the vagus nerve connects to the vocal cords and throat. Even 2–3 minutes of humming or singing loudly can have a noticeable calming effect! 😁
