At CVS, we are deeply grateful to the people who fought for these rights and helped create pathways toward dignity, belonging, and self determination. This month, we honour and celebrate Lois Curtis and all those whose voices and actions continue to shape a more inclusive future.
Lois Curtis was an American artist and disability rights advocate whose life and work helped change the world.
Her advocacy led to the landmark Olmstead Supreme Court decision in 1999, which affirmed that unjustified segregation of people with disabilities is discrimination. Before this ruling, Lois spent many years institutionalized despite being fully capable of living in community. Her courage helped advance the right to community based living, inclusion, and choice for people with disabilities around the world.
