Can’t afford a doula? Here’s what I’d tell you anyway.

Not everyone can hire a doula, and that doesn’t mean you should walk into birth without support. There are a few things I’d want you to know if I couldn’t be by your side.

Understanding how birth actually works matters. When you know what’s normal, what to expect, and how your environment and team impact your body, you’re less likely to feel blindsided or doubt yourself.

I’d also tell you to practice relaxing now. Birth isn’t about powering through, it’s about softening and learning to surrender. Your breath, your affirmations, and the way your support team steps in can all help when things get tough.

And please, stay home as long as you can in early labour. Home is safe, calm, and familiar. That’s where your body can do its best work before you bring it into the bright lights of the hospital.

Another thing, know your pain management options. Even if you’re planning on an epidural, sometimes it’s not available or it doesn’t work. Having other tools like nitrous oxide, hydrotherapy, massage, or a TENS machine means you aren’t left scrambling.

Finally, don’t forget about postpartum. Birth is one day, but postpartum is the long haul. Food, boundaries, and rest aren’t luxuries, they’re how you heal and thrive.

Save this for later and share it with someone who’s preparing for birth. Because whether you have a doula or not, you deserve to feel supported. 💚

If your birth prep involves a Google rabbit hole and dusty subreddit, this is your sign…

And birth prep is much deeper than this but my point is that a powerful birth requires focus and preparation because we live in a time where we are so far removed from our intuition.

As your doula, I’m not here to boss you around and tell you what to do. I’m here to hold space and help you get clear and show up for YOUR birth. YOU are the main character!

When we talk about planning for birth, it’s easy to jump straight to the big stuff—hospital or home, who’s on your birth team, what to pack in your bag…

But honestly? It’s the small, foundational things that can have the biggest impact on how your birth feels.

That’s why I created this cheat sheet. 💚
To pull together the basics that actually matter for a physiological birth—the kind of birth where your body leads, your baby follows, and your hormones are working with you, not against you.

✨ Moving freely
✨ Feeling safe and supported
✨ Using your breath and your voice
✨ Protecting your golden hour
✨ And most importantly, tuning into your intuition instead of outside pressure

These aren’t fancy hacks.
They’re the forgotten wisdom of how birth has always worked best.
And when we build on that foundation, we create space for powerful, grounded, and instinct-led births.

Save this post so you can come back to it anytime you need a reminder.

And if you know a mama who wants a birth that feels connected, not clinical—send this her way. 💫

Let me be real with you—there are things I did in my birth that absolutely sabotaged my experience. And I didn’t even realize it at the time.

From agreeing to an induction that led to nonstop monitoring and inconsistent contractions (aka, zero coping ability) to not communicating my needs with my birth team—I set myself up for a much harder labour than it needed to be.

But here’s the thing—I know better now, and I want you to go into your birth feeling powerful, prepared, and well supported.

On the last slide, I’m sharing some simple but game-changing ways you can avoid the mistakes I made and set yourself up for a birth that feels right for YOU.

Before the “but what if’s…” start rolling in—yes, most of these preferences shouldn’t be an issue 9 times out of 10.

And no, it’s not about being picky or bossy. There are real reasons behind these choices. Let me break it down:

“Put the baby directly on my chest and do not clamp the cord until I request it.”
Most hospitals offer delayed clamping… for 90 seconds. I’d wait until the cord is white. Why? Increased blood volume, boosted iron stores, lower anemia risk, and fewer transfusions. It’s about *informed choices.

"Please remain out of the room unless requested or completing an exam I’ve agreed to.”
Everyone carries energy—fear, excitement, impatience—and you feel it. Birth hormones thrive in cozy, calm spaces, not rooms full of strangers. It’s not personal; it’s just helpful.

“I will be laboring and moving intuitively.”
Your body knows what to do. Sway, kneel, roar—it’s your birth. Push how you want, not how someone else thinks you should.

“Keep your fingers outside of me while I’m pushing.”
This happens a lot, especially with first-time moms. Unless there’s a medical emergency, this usually comes down to impatience. Trust the process.

Please use positive language while speaking with me during my labour.”
Words matter. Comments like “lazy uterus” or “difficult baby” are unhelpful and insulting. Providers can communicate concerns effectively without undermining you.

I will not be refraining from eating or drinking during my labour.”
This isn’t evidence-based. Full stop. Your body is burning calories and needs fuel. Restricting food does more harm than good, and modern protocols address surgical risks like aspiration.

"Don’t put a hat on my baby.”
Immediate postpartum bonding depends on smell, warmth, and skin-to-skin. Your body regulates baby’s temp better than any polyester hat. Plus… ew, unwashed fabric on fresh baby skin? No thanks.

Which of these surprised you most? Let’s chat below!

“It’s not about being a superhero or earning a medal.”

Honestly, I cringe every time I hear that line. Do people really think women choose unmedicated births for applause? 🤔

Here’s the real issue: informed decision-making requires full transparency. But far too often, pregnant women walk into their births unaware of the many additional interventions that often accompany an epidural.

This isn’t something they should be learning during labour. If OBs and midwives aren’t discussing the potential ripple effects of an epidural when talking about pain management plans—or worse, if they’re not asking about those plans at all—it’s a serious oversight.

Epidurals are an incredible tool when needed, but they come with considerations. Knowing how they might shape your labor allows you to make choices you can feel good about, no matter the outcome.

Expecting? Save this post or send it to your partner!

From the early days post birth, to the time you decide to end your nursing journey, your milk will continue to change and evolve to best suit your baby. Wild, huh? Not only does the nutrition that it offers change but also the colours. Don’t be afraid, we expect this!

Here’s a breakdown of each stage and what the colors mean:
✨ Colostrum: The first milk, rich and golden, helps boost baby’s immunity.
✨ Transitional Milk: Slightly lighter, it bridges the gap to mature milk, providing full nourishment.
✨ Foremilk & Hindmilk: Foremilk quenches thirst; hindmilk satisfies hunger. Both are perfect for your baby!

And those color changes? They’re totally normal! Illness, hydration needs, and even a tiny bit of blood can cause different hues.

💛 Save this post as a reminder of how incredibly responsive your body is to your baby. Breast milk is unique to each mom and baby, changing day by day to support them as they grow.

Thanks to the wonderful ladies who donated their photos of pumped milk 💚

As we head into RSV season, there are natural ways to protect your little one and support their growing immune system! I personally find this approach to be much safer than using harsh chemicals around your brand-new baby! Here’s how you can take a holistic approach to keep your family healthy:

Your breastmilk is a powerful shield! It adapts to your baby’s needs, producing specific antibodies that help protect against viruses like RSV.

A healthy diet rich in Vitamin C, Zinc, and Vitamin D strengthens your immune system—and, in turn, boosts the immunity benefits your baby receives through breastfeeding! Leafy greens, oranges, and seeds are all great options.

Consider adding supplements like elderberry, echinacea, or nettle to your routine. These herbs are known for their immune-boosting properties and are gentle enough to support you and your baby.

Dry air can irritate your baby’s delicate respiratory system. Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which helps keep their nasal passages clear and reduces congestion.

Exposure to everyday germs is actually good for your baby’s immune system! While asking sick visitors to stay home is important, don’t hesitate to let your little one meet healthy family and friends.

Taking simple, gentle steps like these can go a long way in helping your baby thrive during the colder months. What natural remedies do you use in your home?
