The laws and patterns of nature apply to the human body and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, we look to the seasons to help diagnose and treat imbalances or deficiencies in the body. Transitioning from Summer into Autumn is one of the most important ones to keep an eye on as it sets the stage for how our health will fare throughout the fall and winter. When the heat and dampness of summer begin to fade and the coolness and drying qualities of fall start to move in, our energy slows and our bodies begin to prepare for the slower moving winter months.
If we don’t have a smooth transition into each season, TCM believes illness will be inevitable. Harmony is the main objective and Acupuncture is one of the easiest ways to obtain that.
Acupuncture works using meridian theory which is a collection of invisible energy pathways through the body. The meridians help move your Qi (vital energy), blood, yin and yang to organ systems to keep your body in harmony and to avoid stagnation. If our Wei Qi (defensive Qi) is deficient, we are more prone to the common cold and pathogenic invasion.
Tips to prepare for a healthy fall and winter:
• Find a registered acupuncturist and establish what your imbalances or deficiencies are.
• Slow down. Remaining social and active is still important during Fall, but by taking it down a notch, we can also begin to conserve and store.
• Take a walk outside & breathe deeply (but wear a scarf). This is the best way to strengthen the lungs. great time to align yourself with nature and heal yourself mentally and physically.
• Let go. Just like the trees let go of their leaves, you should let go of negativity. Constant negativity can make us feel sad and hopeless, this damages the lungs. Try to be aware of your negative feelings and make them positive.
• Fall and Winter is the best time to eat warming and moistening foods. Align your diet with the season. Soups and stews should begin to take center stage in your diet as well as Fall apples and pears, wonderful for moistening the stomach, lungs, and intestines. Because Fall is cooling and drying, it’s best to eat foods that are warming and moistening.
