Medication can play an important role in the treatment of depression and anxiety β€” but for many people, it is not the complete picture. ⚑ A substantial body of research supports the effectiveness of evidence-based psychological treatment β€” including Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy β€” for both conditions, either alongside medication or independently.

Psychological treatment addresses the thought patterns, behavioural responses, and underlying factors that contribute to depression and anxiety in ways that medication alone does not. For some individuals, psychological treatment produces more durable change over time. The most effective approach is individualized β€” which is one reason that consultation with a Registered Doctoral Psychologist is a meaningful step.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) provides publicly funded mental health and addictions services across the province β€” including in Prince Albert β€” through assessment, treatment, and consultative services available by self-referral, physician referral, or agency referral.

For many Saskatchewan residents, SHA services are the most accessible entry point into the mental health system. Knowing they exist, and knowing how to access them, is itself a meaningful step.

The perinatal period β€” pregnancy and the first year following birth β€” is a time of significant psychological transition, and mental health challenges during this time are far more common than many people realize. ⚑

Perinatal depression and anxiety affect a meaningful proportion of individuals during pregnancy and postpartum, and they are distinct from the brief emotional shifts often referred to as the "baby blues."

Symptoms can include persistent low mood, excessive worry, difficulty bonding, intrusive thoughts, and significant changes in sleep and appetite that go beyond what is explained by newborn care alone.

Perinatal mental health concerns are treatable β€” and recognizing them early is important.

When a child struggles to manage big emotions, the instinct is often to correct the behaviour β€” but what the research tells us is that co-regulation comes first. πŸ’‘

Children's nervous systems develop the capacity for self-regulation through repeated experiences of being regulated alongside a calm, present adult. This means that before a child can be taught to manage their emotions, they need to feel safe, seen, and supported.

Practical strategies include naming emotions without judgment, staying physically present during distress, and returning to problem-solving only once the child has calmed.

Depression is not the same as sadness β€” and that distinction matters. πŸ’‘ Sadness is a normal emotional response to difficult circumstances. Depression is a clinical condition that affects how the brain functions, often presenting as persistent low mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and in some cases, no recognizable emotional feeling at all.

Many people with depression do not cry frequently or appear visibly sad. Some describe feeling numb, empty, or simply unlike themselves. This is one of the reasons depression is so frequently missed β€” both by those experiencing it and by the people around them.
