👇 DO I NEED A REFERRAL? 👇

No! You do not need a referral to see an audiologist. If you have concerns for your hearing, tinnitus (sounds in your ears), or balance you can book a hearing test without the need for a referral.

Your audiologist can send a report to your family physician, if warranted, or at your request.

🤔 DO I HAVE HEARING LOSS? 👂

Hearing loss typically occurs so gradually we don’t often notice it right away.

This checklist highlights some common signs that your hearing may have started to change. How many did you check off?

▫️0-2: Keep monitoring your hearing. It may also be a good idea to get a baseline audiogram.
▫️3-5: It would be a good idea to book a hearing test with your local audiologist.
▫️6-10: You are most likely experiencing a noticeable change in your hearing. It would be great to have your hearing tested sooner rather than later for best outcomes!

It’s always a good idea to get a baseline hearing test by a registered audiologist if you suspect a change in hearing. Earlier identification can lead to better outcomes in the long term as our hearing continues to change.

🧠 AUDITORY FATIGUE 💤

Auditory fatigue can occur when the brain has to work harder to hear in difficult listening environments. These can include loud noise exposure, straining to hear in noisy surroundings, or long periods of concentrated listening.

Both those with and without hearing loss can experience symptoms of auditory fatigue. Symptoms can include headaches, tiredness, trouble focusing, increased feelings of stress, difficulty performing at work or school, or sensory overload.

To prevent auditory fatigue you can:
▫️Try to control your environment.
▫️Take breaks and let your brain rest.
▫️Use listening supports, such as hearing aids or closed captioning.

If you feel like you need to concentrate more when out with friends or family, or come home exhausted from outings it may be a good idea to have your hearing tested by a registered audiologist. An audiologist can perform a hearing test to provide recommendations and offer strategies to help manage auditory fatigue in your daily life.

🐝 TINNITUS👂

Did you know?

Tinnitus is most often a ‘side effect’ of hearing loss. Research shows roughly 90% of those who experience tinnitus also have some degree of hearing loss.

Tinnitus can be thought of as a sound (ringing, whistling, buzzing, hissing, etc.) that you hear with it any other external sounds around you.

If you have begun to hear a sound in your ears it may be a sign that your hearing should be checked out! We have audiologists who are able to talk to you more about causes and treatments for tinnitus, or simply answer more questions you might have.

👂EAR INFECTIONS 🦠

Not only can ear infections be painful; they can muffle or worsen how we hear. When fluid lingers in the ear canal, sound clarity drops.

This is particularly important to monitor for children. If a child has an ear infection, talking will not be clear and rather may sound like people are ‘under water’. This can negatively impact speech and language development.

For both children and adults it is a good idea to be assessed by your family physician and have you hearing tested by an audiologist if you suspect you have an ear infection or recurring infections.

While infections can clear up on their own in 4-6 weeks they can become chronic. If ear infections happen often a referral to an ENT physician may be needed! Your local audiologist can complete a hearing test and your family physician will refer you to the ENT.

💡DID YOU KNOW?👂

Around 3 in 5 Canadians will have some amount of hearing loss during their lifetime. Unfortunately, many people do not realize this!

It is recommended to have your hearing tested every 1-2 years starting as early as 50-55 years old.

Regular testing can lead to earlier diagnosis and intervention, which can make a big difference in overall hearing, memory, and health in general.

🎧 DID YOU KNOW? 🎧

Noise cancelling headphones can be great for loud environments, but they are not recommended to be used all the time.

The frequent use of noise cancellation can cause our brains ability to hear in noise to deteriorate. It is healthy for our brains to hear sounds (and noise) around us! So, don’t worry noise cancellation headphones are great when they are needed but it is always good to find a balance!

💥 DID YOU KNOW?💥

Noise may not only be annoying, but it can also lead to hearing damage.

It’s important to be aware of the decibel levels we might be exposed to and to use proper hearing protection when needed!

The OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) limit for noise exposure in the workplace is 85 dB. At this level a hearing protection protocol must be put in place. At 90 dB hearing protection must be worn.

Curious about custom hearing protection? We have options that are comfortable and made just for you!
