To have a good yoga practice, it's not about perfecting the poses. It's about showing up and being there for the wobbles, funny faces, and imperfections. There's peace in that space🫢

For years, I thought my body was failing me or that I just wasn't "getting it" with certain poses.

It turns out that's not the case.

In Bernie Clark's Yin Yoga training, it fully clicked for me. Not every pose is going to look the same in everybody, nor is it realistic for every pose to work for everybody.

Why? Because our joints are put together differently, our proportions vary, our lifetime of movement and activities differ, and we have a unique injury history. As Bernie would say, we each have a different biology and biography.

Instead of complying with every cue, we need to ask ourselves, "Is this working for me?"

If the answer is no, test the pose variation(s). If that still doesn't work, skip the pose altogether. There is NO shame in it.

Are there any pose cues that have been useless to you?

Things I never expected at my teacher training, but I wouldn't change for the world πŸ’šπŸ™

1. Not a moment of silence - roosters crowing, dogs barking, mariachi bands marching through the street daily. It taught me the value of focus and not taking disturbances too seriously.

2. An ashram simulated experience - the discipline of waking up at 5 am, a strict studying/practice schedule until 7:30 pm, and then spending the evening with homework. For basically 17 days straight. Let's just say, being in an unfamiliar country, frequently tired, and constantly surrounded by 20 women navigating their own difficulties, s**t comes up.

3. Ugly crying in front of strangers, and being comforted and seen by those I barely new.

4. Making lifelong connections and friends.

5. Understanding that yoga is not about executing a pose perfectly, because there really is no such thing. The poses are just the tip of the iceberg.

6. Knowing that yoga was too important to me not to share it with others.

My heart warms after seeing these memories from 7 years ago. I'm immensely grateful that I did the scary thing and jumped in with both feet πŸ™

Have you ever walked into a situation expecting things to be a certain way, and your expectations were not met in the best possible way? I'd love to hear about it.

🌈 SALE - Beginner's Yoga 7-class seriesπŸ”₯

In this series, I'll share what I've gleaned from over 15 years of practice, and what I wish I would have known as a new yoga student.

Yoga is so much more than just stretching your body (although that part in itself is valuable). It can help regulate stress and anxiety, relieve back pain, ease arthritis, and improve sleep, to name just a handful of benefits.

If any of this sounds like music to your ears, consider signing up. Maybe bring a friend, spouse or family member, too.

If cost is a barrier for you, please know, it need not be. Call or text 250-614-3965 for a reduced rate.

Sign up here or text me for more details.

HelloπŸ‘‹out there :) Some of you know me well, but certainly not all of you, and it's been years since I've properly introduced myself and how I came to be a yoga teacher.

You might have noticed, at this point, I only teach yoga for part of the year. More specifically, from end of October to the end of April. That is because plants are my other lifelong love and a more than full-time baby. I am part of a second generation family business, and I help run Hunniford Gardens,

~ My journey to yoga ~

I was introduced to yoga in my late teens by "hippie" in-laws. Mostly, I was intrigued with the physical part of the practice. I had a cheap Costco yoga mat and a Patricia Walden/Rodney Yee DVD. I watched those videos dozens of times. In retrospect, yoga was teaching me how to be more peaceful, connected to my body, and aware.

When many parts of my life imploded in my late 20's, I was squirrelly, stressed, and fearful. I knew I had to find a healthy way to process it, and so I returned to yoga. I joined a local studio in Kamloops (in a city where I knew no one) and continued practicing at home. I fell in love with the breathwork, the poses, the boundless depth and variation in styles, and the philosophy.

Over time, yoga changed my life. It challenged me, and allowed me to feel good in my body. It gave me awareness of the subconscious thoughts and emotions that I was having (which were often confronting and unpleasant). It taught me that I could breathe and stay present, even when it felt uncomfortable. It taught me that I could regulate my nervous system. It taught me that I could get through difficulty. It taught me the beauty of using breath, movement, and contemplation to express myself and work through the messiness of being human.

In 2018, I was hungry to know more. I signed up for a teacher training in Mexico, purely with the intent to deepen my own practice. It was so transformative that by the end of the training, I felt compelled to teach. Most fortunately, I was also blessed to have a studio space available to me, the space in which I currently teach. It's like the universe conspired with me :)

Since my 200 hour training, I've continued exploring the path of yoga. I've taken training in Yin Yoga, Gravity Yoga, Kundalini yoga, and various courses on philosophy and asana. I'm currently taking a 50 hour anatomy course, with an endless topics on my wish list.

I share this not to blather on about myself, but in hopes that you can see all that yoga can offer. The fact that yoga is a physical exercise merely scratches the surface. It also offers emotional, mental, physiological, energetic, and spiritual benefits. You only need to explore it with openness and curiosity. You might not get what you want, but you'll get what you need.

~

When I'm not gardening, learning about a new topic, or practicing yoga, you'll find me reading, hiking, strength training, and spending time with my dogs.

Getting into the shoulders feels SO dang good 😍

When it comes to the physical aspect of yoga, accessing the shoulders is my personal favorite πŸ’š (Unlike hips and hamstrings, which I appreciate the most AFTER I come out of the pose πŸ˜†)

Whether it's stress, a desk job, long hours on devices, or poor posture habits that have the shoulders tense and contracted, yoga can be a powerful tool for releasing tightness and stuck energy.

You'll get the immediate benefit of working on the shoulders, but also, over time, a greater awareness of the shoulders themselves. You can then begin to consciously breathe into tension, interrupting some of the tightness and stress before it escalates.

With a consistent practice, this checking in with the shoulders, breathing, and softening becomes second nature.

My shoulders still get tight and tense from long hours at the computer, lifting weights, and life's stressors, but that chronic, long-held tension doesn't run as deep.

The magic ingredients are: a diverse range of slow, mindful poses + conscious breathing.

With most of us living tech-centered and/or desk centered lives, I feel it's vital to regularly include shoulder work into my classes.

Do you agree? Do you have any favorite poses for the shoulders?
