Helping those who care for seniors feel confident, supported and ethically equipped is at the heart of a new initiative taking shape across Northern Health in collaboration with UNBC.

A new initiative, Moral Empowerment System for Healthcare, equips providers and organizations with the ethical competencies needed to navigate ethical challenges in home and community care.

The program is being implemented through a collaborative effort between Northern Health and UNBC, led by Dr. Esther Alonso‑Prieto (Project Lead), who brings together her role as Lead of the Northern Health Ethics Service and Adjunct Professor in UNBC’s School of Nursing.

She is joined by UNBC Nursing Professor Dr. Caroline Sanders (pictured) as Project Co‑Lead, whose work focuses on translating research into real‑world improvements for patients, families and providers. The initiative is further strengthened through collaboration with UNBC Nursing Assistant Professors Dr. Viviane Josewski and Dr. Zahra Rahmaty, creating a strong bridge between ethics, practice and evaluation.

A hidden diagnostic gap affecting Canadians with brain disorders.

Many Canadians with dementia or Parkinson’s are misdiagnosed because symptoms of apathy can look like depression. Mislabeling these symptoms can delay proper care, increase caregiver stress and reduce quality of life.

In a recent article in The Conversation, UNBC School of Nursing Assistant Professor Dr. Aderonke Agboji and Political Science Associate Professor Dr. Fiona MacDonald highlight a simple assessment tool to help distinguish apathy from depression and stress the importance of training for clinicians and caregivers.

A message from Interim President, Dr. Bill Owen on behalf of the UNBC community.

"I am deeply shocked and saddened by the heartbreaking events that unfolded in Tumbler Ridge on Tuesday. My heartfelt condolences go out to all those affected by this tragedy. The flags at the Prince George campus are at half-mast in honour of those who lost their lives.

The grief residents in Tumbler Ridge are feeling is unimaginable. This morning, I am thinking of the families, educators, health-care providers, first responders and others who are processing the pain their close-knit community must now face, pain that is shared by the people of northern B.C., across the country and throughout the world.

Many within the UNBC community have personal, educational or family connections to Tumbler Ridge. On behalf of the University community, I want to emphasize that no one is alone, we will work through this together.

My thoughts also extend to students, faculty and staff at the Peace-River Liard campus in Fort St. John, the South-Central campus in Quesnel and the Northwest campus in Terrace. Deans and Directors will be reaching out to offer any additional supports that may be needed by our University community in the regions.

In challenging times, compassion and connection matter. Let us continue to support one another with care, patience, and understanding. Together, we can help foster safety, and a sense of community for all who are affected."

Support services are available for all UNBC students, faculty and staff who may want additional support during this time.

In a piece written for The Conversation, UNBC researcher Dr. Darryn Di Francesco analyzes how the ‘wine mom’ stereotype is being weaponized to silence women’s voices and deflect political responsibility for protest violence related to Immigration and Customs Enforcement efforts (ICE) underway in the United States.

Drawing on her research as a medical sociologist and gender scholar, the UNBC School of Nursing Assistant Professor explores how historical patterns of mother-blaming are shaping the U.S administration’s narrative in the aftermath of the shooting death of Renee Good by an ICE agent.
