If your child in Prince George is saying they don’t want to go to school tomorrow, you’re not alone — and neither are they.
After hearing about frightening events, even when they happen elsewhere, children can feel unsafe in ways they can’t fully explain. Saying “I don’t want to go” is often their way of saying “I need reassurance.”
A few gentle ways to support them:
• Listen first. Let them tell you what they’re worried about without rushing to fix it.
• Acknowledge their feelings. You can say, “That makes sense,” even if the fear feels bigger than the situation.
• Reassure them about safety and trusted adults at school.
• Offer choices where you can — who walks them in, a check-in plan, or something comforting to carry.
• Let teachers know if your child is struggling. Schools expect this and want to help.
Some children may need a slower start. Others may need extra hugs, extra patience, or extra quiet tonight. There is no one right response.
Our hearts are with parents, caregivers, educators, and children across Prince George as we move into tomorrow together. Support, compassion, and care are always close by.
