Appointments are 15 minutes per patient. I spend the first 2 to 5 minutes reviewing the chart, reminding myself where we've got to, looking at labs and imaging, checking we are up to date with screening etc. Then 10 minutes with the patient assessing and managing 1 to 10 problems 😱......and then 2 to 20 minutes in my office doing prescriptions, lab requisitions, imaging requisitions, referral letters....and finally writing the chart note to accurately capture what we've done in the appointment.

I know the math doesn't add up. I love being a physician, but the clock is always against us and this makes us very vulnerable to burnout. I often leave the office exhausted.

Soooo.....I'm trialling an artificial intelligence software called Heidi that will listen to my consultations and produce the chart note for me! I tried it for the first time on Friday and it was amazing. It does not have any access to who I'm seeing so confidentiality is not an issue.

I'm hopeful that this software will improve efficiency and result in shorter waits in the office or virtually, and that I'll have more left in the tank at the end of the workday 😉.
