This weekend concluded the 2023 Sanet Series.

It's safe to say that none of us are the same people that we were when we started back in March. We've grown and stretched to places we thought were impossible a few months ago.

The theme that came up again and again throughout the entire year was gratitude.

In the last recording I have of Vince from May 20th in the course, he said how grateful he was for Dr. Bob Sanet (the man to my left in the front and centre of the photo) and the insight we got into his thinking.

Vince shared how he was grateful for the journey he took into doing Vision Therapy.

He said that if he had the chance to do it all over again, he wouldn't change a thing.

The last thing he said was that he was grateful that this is what he would get to do for the rest of his life.

It's a beautiful gift to have those words from him.

And I'm grateful for all of these people in this photo and not, that have lifted me over so many hurdles the last five months.

I'm grateful for our team and our patients new and existing for supporting us. I'm grateful for our community for your care.

I'm grateful that I also get the opportunity to do this for the rest of my life. I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Every child matters.

The Pepper Tree Hair Studio has taught me the Gitxsan phrase Hugwili w’en.

It means to walk softly, gently, caring for the Earth and for each other.

May we all remember to do this today and every day 🧡

We're hiring!

We're looking for someone who loves people. Who loves to complete tasks.
Who loves doing different things throughout the day.
Who loves to learn new things.
Who loves the idea of being part of our team.

We need someone who has some flexibility with their schedule as you can imagine we are rolling with the punches at the moment.

One to two weeks a month it would be 5 days (Monday to Friday 8:30-5) and the other 2-3 weeks would be 3 shorter days (Tuesday to Thursday 10-4).

If you are interested please email your resume to team@truenorthoptometry.com

We are fully stocked up on our favourite frame Carrol from . That’s the good news. The sad news is that this is the last run of her for the time being! But there is still more good news! Her sister Doreen is back in production after taking a hiatus and we love just as much. ♥️

The typical photos of the Sanet Series weekends were of Vince and myself in front of a beautiful photo of LC Gunn that hangs above our dining room table.

I couldn't imagine going through a weekend of deep learning and transformation without Vince or beside me so I made the trek to San Diego to be in person.

Nothing is ever coherent after the weekend.

People ask "How was it?"

And we all answer "Amazing! Empowering! Life Changing" but we can't describe how.

It's this intangible thing that happens to all of us in our vulnerabilities to receive. To be patients ourselves. To really understand deeply that what we're doing is changing lives.

That our patients are not their ocular conditions they come to us with.

And that the biggest thing that we do is provide hope and a safe space for our patients to have their own growth and transformation.

I could whip out all sorts of facts about how much of your brain is used for vision or how your neuro plasticity never goes away.

But really what we hope to be able to do for you, or your child is to give you hope. That you will get to experience your life in a different way that will give you great relief and comfort.

We were truly lucky this week to have had Dr. Danny Walker in donating his time to see our patients.

It gave us so much comfort and joy watching him expertly care for our patients in the same way Dr. Budac would have.

Thank you for the gift of your time and excellence Dr. Walker!

I’d like to formally introduce you to someone who has been instrumental to our practice since the day we opened in April 2021. And has become even more instrumental in the past two and a half months.

With me to the right, is Laura Appleby.

Laura is entering her third year at the University of Waterloo School of Optometry.

The same school Vince went to.

Laura was always part of our future.

I have a photo in a phone somewhere of her in our building when it was just 2x4’s and dreams.

She was always going to join us and help us build our practice and serve more people in our community.

She was always going to partner with us.

To both her and I it just looked a lot different. We would have had the man we both deeply respected and looked to for guidance.

Vincent hand selected her. He wrote her letter of recommendation to get into school. Laura had been shadowing him for years.

He was her mentor.

When she graduates in 2025, the moment she is cleared to practice under her own licence, she will become my business partner.

Now, as she’s going through school, she has been embraced by Vince’s mentors and teachers who are providing her with every resource they have.

These doctors Vince was learning from are the best in the world. They wrote the manuals and course curriculum. They did the research studies.

They’re it.

And they’re teaching her it all in addition to what she is learning from the brilliant faculty at UW.

Vince always said to me that Laura would be a better doctor than him.

And he was right. But only because she’ll be starting off a few steps ahead of him and get more time to be the best.

So to Laura as you embark on your third year, I’ll leave you with what Vince would say to our son every morning at school drop off.

You can do ANYTHING and anything is POSSIBLE.

This morning at 7AM a large explosion occurred at a building the next block over from us.

We are grieving with our community are there are reported casualties and damage to many neighbouring businesses.

I believe ours is currently unscathed.

We are currently not able to access our clinic and will be closed for the day.

To our patients we had scheduled this afternoon to see Dr. Danny Walker, we will do our best to find another time for you to be seen.

Stay safe.
