Doulas play a specific role at birth, but what is it? I interviewed Doula Poppy Child from about what a doula is, what they do, how much they cost and questions to ask when hiring one. Poppy is also a Hypnobirthing practitioner. You can see more of Poppy’s work here and Poppy would.....

You wouldn’t walk into the biggest game of your life without a coach.

Not because you’re incapable.
Not because your body doesn’t know what to do.
But because when the pressure is high, emotions are real, and decisions matter…

having someone experienced in your corner changes everything.

Birth is no different.
A doula is your coach.
Your birth plan is your playbook.

You can absolutely go into birth without one.
People do it every day.

But imagine:
Trying to remember everything you learned while you’re in pain
Making big decisions in the moment without guidance
Your partner trying to support you while also feeling overwhelmed and unsure

That’s like asking a player to coach themselves mid-game.

A coach doesn’t play the game for you.
They don’t replace your partner.
They don’t make decisions for you.

They:
Know the flow of the game
Recognize when something needs to shift
Help you stay focused when things get intense
Remind you of the plan when everything feels chaotic
Support the whole team so everyone performs better

And your partner?
They don’t have to carry it all alone.

With a doula:
They can be present instead of panicked
Support you without second-guessing themselves
Actually experience the birth instead of trying to manage it

No one says,
“I’ll just skip the coach, we’ll figure it out under pressure.”

Because we all understand:
Preparation is one thing. Support in the moment is everything.

You can absolutely have a baby without a doula.

But if you’re asking,
“Is it worth it?”

The better question is:
Would you go into one of the most important, intense, and unpredictable days of your life without someone experienced by your side?

Such a pleasure to host some of the Prince George Doulas at Soma Landing this morning. ♥️

We gathered over tea to connect, share about our work, and talk about how we can continue supporting families in our community, together.

Doulas offer steady, compassionate support through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum season. They walk alongside families, offering education, encouragement, and presence during some of life’s most transformative moments.

I’m so grateful for the incredible birth workers serving families here in Prince George. Community care truly takes a village. 🤍

A 2025 study published in AJOG adds powerful, up-to-date data showing associations between doula care and improved maternal and newborn outcomes.

Key Maternal Outcomes:

More vaginal births after cesarean (VBAC): For every 100 patients who received doula care, there were 15 to 34 additional VBACs compared with those without doula care.

Higher postpartum follow-up attendance: 5 to 6 more per 100 received postpartum office visits.

Key Neonatal / Infant Outcomes

Increased exclusive breastfeeding rates: Babies whose families had doula support were more likely to breastfeed exclusively.

Fewer preterm births (and early preterm births): Doula-supported births showed a reduction in preterm birth rates.

In short, the study links doula care with improvements in birth outcomes — across birth mode (more VBACs), infant health (less prematurity), and early infant care (breastfeeding, postpartum follow-up).

Welcome to the PG Doula Group!

The purpose of this group is to connect every family searching for extra support with independent doulas available for their estimated due dates.

As a disclaimer this page does not employ doulas, we only provide names. When you are provided with doulas to contact, we highly recommend asking for references and doing a thorough interview before selecting the best fit.

Because there are only a handful of active doulas serving in Prince George, there may be times when we cannot find a doula for your dates. We would rather provide you with excellent, dependable doula support than mediocre, unreliable service.

We wish you all the best in your pregnancy, birth & postpartum journey!

A doula is not someone you call when labor starts and hope for the best.

We are not a last-minute rescue.
We are not a savior rushing in to “fix” birth.

A doula is someone you build a relationship with months before you ever feel a contraction.

When you hire a doula early, the real work begins long before labor. We walk beside you as you learn, question, process, and prepare. We help you understand your body, your options, and your voice, so by the time birth arrives, you’re not looking to someone else to save you. You already know you can do this.

We don’t just attend a birth.
We help shape the experience you walk into it with.

We:
~Educate you on the physiology of labor so fear doesn’t run the show
~Help you understand common interventions, your choices, and your rights
~Talk through what-ifs so nothing feels shocking or overwhelming
~Help you build a birth plan that’s flexible, realistic, and truly yours
~Teach your partner how to support you with confidence — not panic
~Normalize what labor looks and feels like so you don’t doubt yourself
~Help you practice positions, comfort measures, breathing, and coping tools
~Prepare you mentally and emotionally, not just physically
~Hold space for your fears, questions, and past experiences
~Remind you again and again that your body is not broken

By the time labor begins, we aren’t strangers walking into your birth.

We are a familiar, grounding presence.
We already know your preferences, your triggers, your goals, your strength.

And during labor?
We remind you:
~You are informed
~You are capable
~You are allowed to ask questions
~You are allowed to pause
~You are allowed to change your mind
~You are in control of your birth choices

Hiring a doula early isn’t about having backup.
It’s about walking into birth confident instead of afraid.
Prepared instead of unsure.
Supported instead of alone.

If you want to feel calm, grounded, educated, and powerful when labor begins, don’t wait until the last minute.

This work starts long before labor does.
And it changes everything.

Today’s topic centers around a book written by my guest, Dr. Margo Lowy. She has researched and written about maternal ambivalence, including how to understand it and why it remains a taboo subject. We will discuss destigmatizing uncomfortable feelings and normalize the understanding that motherhood is not “all or nothing.” We’ll cover the darker emotions of anger, guilt, and resentment, and we'll refute the myth of “the perfect mother” and recognize that motherhood can be viewed in different ways. Join us to learn more!
