What do Doula’s really do? The short answer is, we do whatever it takes to make sure our families feel supported, seen and heard. 💜

What Do Doulas Really Do? by Penny Simkin
These events, combined with my own early experience as a childbirth educator attending the labors of some of my students, helped me see how different women are during labor than how they are in daily life. The more I witnessed this, the more curious I became. Having now attended hundreds of births as a doula, I have thought a lot about the unique role of doulas compared to others who attend births. I want to share those thoughts in this paper.

A heart-to-heart interview with Karen Kleiman. Maternal mental health needs more recognition and support 💜

Northern Health is pleased to share an update on behalf of senior administrative and medical leadership at the University Hospital of Northern BC, about maternity care for high-risk patients in Prince George and the NH region.
Thanks to ongoing efforts by, and collaboration with, dedicated providers in the UHNBC obstetrics/Gynaecology group and locum specialists, all potential on-call coverage gaps in August and September have been filled, and patients will continue to have access to safe, high-quality maternity care at UHNBC's Labour and Delivery (Maternity) unit.

When we learn about birth, we know that there are often unexpected turns we may encounter. These “service reductions” are yet another unexpected that we need to shift and flow with. It is WAY less than ideal and just another thing we have no control over. This gives us an opportunity to practice being present, and doing only what the moment asks of us.

It is always important to have backup plans for possible scenarios when preparing for birth, and this is just another unlikely, but possible one.

Please know that Northern Health & the OB group are working extremely hard to find a solution to the decreased OB coverage. The UHNBC Maternity unit is very much open and ready to triage and care for families as much as they can.

Reach out to the link below if you have more questions or need more info. There is a phone number as well as an email to contact.

Please see this important notice for pregnant individuals in the NH region, on behalf of the Department of Obstetrics at University Hospital of Northern BC. Connect with your primary maternity care provider about your upcoming birth plans, and if you are pregnant and don't yet have a provider, get connected to prenatal care via NH Virtual Clinic, or the Urgent Primary Care Centre (UPCC) in Prince George.
