What is the best position for baby to be in when labor begins?

The Left Occiput Anterior position has the reputation of being the best fetal position. LOA is just one of the best positions to help the baby be in the smallest diameter to fit the pelvis. The LOA baby’s back is on the mother’s left side, and faces towards the mother’s back.

A good fetal position aims the baby’s crown onto the cervix to help it open more easily and to allow for labor to progress more smoothly. When babies start labor with the back of the head towards mother’s anterior (front), less rotation is required to happen. Rotation plays a very important role in birth.

The ideal, or optimal, fetal position is a flexed baby. A flexed baby can use their spine, back and shoulder muscles to help themselves be born. Flexed baby’s bodies are lined up to make their kicks at the top of the womb (fundus) be more effective in moving them down through the pelvis.

Spinning Babies® helps baby get into position for birth. For every fetal position, there are techniques and methods that we encourage in order to facilitate movement and rotation.

There is much more regarding baby positions. You can read about each one here: https://www.spinningbabies.com/pregnancy-birth/baby-position/

Have you done The Flying Cow Girl? This technique opens the inlet and helps baby engage. Together, Gail Tully and Cheri Grant (founder, chief contributor and inspiration for Premier Birth Tools) came up with this technique. We recommend doing The Flying Cow Girl using a peanut ball to help baby get into the pelvis.

Have you done this technique in labor? Raise a hand in the comments and tell us about it!
