Rest Your Heart Beside Mine
Come closer, little sister,
rest your weary spirit
against my shoulder.
The night is wide,
and the moon above us
has carried many sorrows before.
It knows how pain rises,
then fades
like smoke leaving the fire.
Do not hold your sadness
so tightly in your hands.
Let it drift into the dark sky.
Let the wind take it
through the cedar trees,
across the sleeping rivers,
beyond the hills
where old griefs go to rest.
Listen
the earth is still breathing softly beneath us.
Mother Earth has not forgotten your name.
Your tears are not weakness.
They are rain returning to the soil,
and even the driest land
blooms again after sorrow.
So lay your memories down tonight,
one by one,
like stones beside the water.
Release the ache you carry
for what is gone,
for what could not stay,
for the voices that now live only in dreams.
Tomorrow is waiting beyond this darkness,
a new sunrise wrapped in gold.
Another path.
Another song.
And when morning touches your face,
you will see
the world did not end with your sadness.
The birds will still greet the dawn,
the rivers will still sing over stone,
and your spirit,
gentle and unbroken,
will rise with them.
So lean on me tonight, sister.
Until your heart remembers
how to become light again.
