A first in the Cariboo region, Quesnel has started a Pflag chapter. Pflag is a support group for family and friends of LGBTQ2S+.

I finished reading Rez Rules by Chief Clarence Louie in time for this national day of Truth and Reconciliation – a day to reflect on the history and legacies of the Indian Residential School system in Canada.
Chief Louie is Chief of the Osooyoos Indian Band and has been Chief for much of the last four decades. For once I feel I really do have a better (not full, but better) understanding of indigenous lives in Canada. For once I feel I really do understand better what it means when we say we “live and work on unceded territories of … [insert band names]”. I hope there could be more indigenous leaders like Chief Louie – people who want to bring their people into prosperity and not administer over poverty.
I highly recommend that everyone read this book – native and non-native alike. It is eye-opening, heart breaking, and well written. May the healing journey of survivors and their families and communities continue.

May 5 is Red Dress Day. It is a day to honour and remember missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit. Red was chosen because “(Red) is really a calling back of the spirits of
these women and allowing them a chance to be among us and have their voices heard through their family members and community.” According to Assembly of First Nations from 2019, Indigenous women are three times more likely than non-indigenous women to be victims of violence, and the average rate, between 2001 – 2014, of homicides involving Indigenous female victims was four times higher than that of homicides involving non-Indigenous female victims. This needs to stop.

We have received a Very Special Message from the amazing Jann Arden that she has videotaped for the LGBTQ2S+ youth here in Quesnel - this message will be played for them at the Youth BBQ on Friday June 10. Please make sure our LGBTQ2S+ youth sign up for the youth BBQ before the end of April on our events page on our website!! They will want to hear Jann's message!
