Today is International Search and Rescue Dog Day!

We are so proud of all the Eromit teams who work hard in service of others. Search and Rescue is not a casual hobby, it is a volunteer job that requires a huge commitment of time and resources from the humans, much more than most realize- since the handlers not only need to be experts with their canine partners, but also at all other elements of SAR.

This group photo is from a few years back at the British Columbia Search Dog Association training camp, where 10 of the 29 dogs in attendance were Eromit Labs!

In honor of this day, we want to shout out to all of our Eromit hero dogs (and their people), whether they are currently validated and working, a team in training, a retired veteran, a career-changed buddy, or now performing their heroics at the rainbow bridge:

Neko (Onyx x R***r), Spirit (Verona x Ace), Digger (Beretta x Ace), Pickle (Beretta x Chester), Charlie (Jackie x Victor), Rory (Verona x Chester), Hazel (Kimber x Chester), Tabor (Shelby x R***r), Zeus (Olympia x R***r), Trooper (Verona x Pickle), Galena (Missie x Chester), Eva (Missie x Chester), Dyna (Missie x Cruiser, Krueger (Jet x Pickle), Bute (Jet x R***r), Ginger (Glitzy x Harvey, Skookum (Missie x Chester), Kitty (Jackie x Harvey), Mac (Avi x Harvey), Avi Jr (Avi x Harvey), Mac (Spice x Buzz), Chilko (Spice x Buzz), Java (Spice x Buzz), Comet (Vanilla x Harvey), Kili (Jet x Buzz), Chase (Jet x Buzz), Rudy (Pepper x Buzz), Kibou (Pepper x Buzz), Sadie (Fergie x R***r), Captain (Vanilla x Buzz), Parker (Pepper x Harvey), Barrett (Pepper x Harvey), Jax (Fergie x Buzz), Raven (Fergie x Buzz), Macaroni (Spice x Buzz) Otto (Spice x Buzz), Equinox (Mayhem x Marlin) ,Molly (Fergie x Buzz), Spring (Venom x Marlin), Benelli (Mezzy x Marlin).

If you are looking to add a puppy to your family, my guess is that you are hoping for a healthy puppy, and if you're navigating the world of advertisements and breeder websites, it may feel a little overwhelming. This article goes over two terms that you may see in your quest:

Vet-Checked

and

Health-Tested

There is a difference between 'vet checked' and 'health testing' and this is important if you are looking for a puppy to purchase. You want BOTH. Some breeders do only one, or the other (or neither, yikes!)

A vet check is what you should expect the breeder to provide for each individual puppy in the litter. Ideally, puppies are being examined before they are matched to new families- so if something subtle but serious IS discovered during the check-up, you aren't already emotionally (or financially) invested in that particular puppy, and can make a more objective decision about if that issue is something you are willing to take on or not.

Or- the breeder may decide a particular puppy is no longer available due to a vet-identified health issue. Maybe that puppy needs further time, development or treatment under the breeder's care before they are placed. Vet checks are often done along with first vaccinations BUT- even if you have a breeder that doesn't vaccinate or vaccinates the puppies themselves- you still want the professional veterinary exam for each puppy. Don't skip this! The unbiased professional assessment of each puppy's condition close to going-home day is important.

Health testing, in comparison, is something that starts long in advance of breeding. It involves orthopedic X-ray assessments and specialist exams for eyes and hearts on the PARENT dogs. It includes breed-specific DNA testing and Coefficient of Inbreeding reports. You may also hear 'Disorder Screening' as an interchangeable term used to describe health testing procedures, but however they are named, these processes are intended to determine both IF a particular dog is suitable for breeding, and if so, it helps in pairing with a suitable mate.

The goal of this sort of testing is to identify dogs who may have sub-clinical health issues (for example, hip dysplasia or heart defects) that are not yet symptomatic, but are likely to be heritable. We want to know about these- so even if they appear outwardly healthy- these dogs do not pass on those genes to the next generation and amplify risk of a more severely affected puppy. Likewise, DNA screening allows the pairing of dogs to avoid recessive conditions and high levels of inbreeding.

If you are scanning advertisements for puppies, it may not be obvious at first which (or hopefully both) a breeder is referring to if they mention only 'healthy puppies!' or 'healthy parent dogs!'.
ASK! A good breeder desperately wants you to be an informed buyer. They want to show you copies of the health testing results they've invested in. They want to tell you about how much effort they've put into ensuring your future puppy is both healthy at the time of placement, but has the best odds for long term genetic soundness too.

It's worth noting that neither of these- the vet check, or parental health testing- guarantees a future without any health problems at all. There are so many things that we can't test for, or that are more nurture than nature – but if you're getting a puppy, your goal is to stack the deck in your favor and that means weeding out the problems that we can assess or reasonably foresee. Without a doubt, the process of choosing a breeder who screens breeding stock and has each puppy seen by a vet is the first step you can take to give your puppy the best chance at a healthy future.
