Where does it hurt?
Posture

Spinal posture is the natural alignment of the spine that helps to limit stress on muscles, ligaments and joints. Prolonged changes in alignment can cause pain, limit range of motion and if left unchecked even cause long-term structural issues.
Most of the time these changes are a consequence of our lifestyle habits. Such as too much screen time, weak or tight muscles, being sedentary, leg length differences, footwear, and bending or twisting. Sometimes, although rarely, they are a result of a structural disorder like congenital short/long legs, congenital scoliosis, or Schuermann’s disease.
Poor posture can manifest in a variety of forms. For example the “Tech” neck which is a forward head shift and protruding chin, the kyphosis which is a rounding or hunching of the shoulders forward, the flat back which is the loss of natural curve in the low back, and scoliosis which is a side to side curve of the spine.
Fortunately there are lifestyle and ergonomic changes that may help. Such as targeted stretches and core strength routines, regular exercise, work station improvements, alignment awareness, and movement breaks. And the appropriate therapy to realign the vertebrae can help maintain and prevent symptoms.
Please consult your medical professional with persistent or reoccurring symptoms.

Where does it hurt?
Hockey: Costovertebral Dysfunction

Costovertebral Dysfunction is a musculoskeletal condition where the rib and vertebral articulation get stuck and misaligned. Impact trauma and sudden rotation in hockey are a common source for this injury. It’s usually an immediate pain in the upper back and shoulder blades that can radiate to the chest, abdomen or the rib cage. Common symptoms are localized pain, restricted movement, pain with deep breaths, pain with coughing, and pain when rotating the torso. Manual therapy such as chiropractic care is very effective in pain management and prevention.

Where does it hurt?
Meralgia Paresthetica
Burning, pain, and numbness along the side of the thigh can sometimes be the result of Meralgia Paresthetica. It’s an inflammation condition that occurs when a branch of the Femoral Nerve is irritated and compressed. This can be in response to a variety of factors such as weight gain, pregnancy, trauma, and repetitive strain disorder. The symptoms are usually on one side of the body and commonly aggravated by walking or standing. Sitting and rest can promote a reduction of symptoms. Treatment focuses on relieving pressure on the nerve in and around the inguinal ligament and surround soft tissues. This is case specific depending on the severity and cause. However, most cases can be managed with conservative care that is designed to relieve pressure and reduce inflammation.

Where does it hurt?
Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are by far the most common type of headache. They are a result of spasm and tension in the muscles of the neck and shoulders usually brought on by stress, injury, overexertion or anxiety. Symptoms will usually present as a dull pressure or tight band that wraps around both sides of the head. Pain can occur in irregular patterns sometimes lasting a few minutes and sometimes lasting days and more often than not there are no visual disturbances and no nausea or vomiting. Treatment of tension headaches is designed to reduce hypertonicity in the soft tissues and increase range of motion in the cervical facet joints. In other words get everything loosened up and moving better. This is where prevention comes in handy. There are simple conservative tools that can help maintain a healthy cervical and thoracic spinal complex. For example regular therapeutic intervention with stretching and appropriate exercise can help promote spinal active range of motion and relax soft tissues. It’s important to note that new and or severe headaches that you’ve never had before may require further medical assessment.

Where does it hurt?
Sciatica
Sciatica is a broad term for the impingement of the sciatic nerve. Bone spurs, disc injury, stenosis, trauma, diabetes and obesity can all be possible sources of nerve occlusion. However, most cases of sciatica that we manage are a result of things like low back injury, pregnancy, soft tissue trauma and repetitive strain injuries. Patients will often describe a shooting pain into the leg that may or not be associated with any specific accident or activity. A lot of times our routines of daily activity become so repetitive in nature that stress to the tissues and joints of the pelvis will eventually lead to sciatica. There is also a high probability of low back and buttock pain associated with sciatica. The trigger for the symptoms can vary from work and play to stress, anxiety and previous injury. As the moving parts gradually become more overloaded the pressure on the nerve increases. Eventually there is referral to the extremity which can be extremely painful and limit range of motion and activity. The purpose of treatment is to relieve the pressure to the nerve and thereby restore normal range of motion to the joints and soft tissues in the affected area. With correct management full recovery in these cases is highly expected.
