Now that summer is peaking around the corner it's time for this reminder.

Yes, we need to be careful with protecting our skin from burn. However, if you always wear sunscreen, makeup with SPF, or lip balm with SPF you are not getting the rays that your body turns into vitamin D.

Even zinc oxide and other natural sunscreens block these rays.

So give yourself 10-20 minutes every day outside without wearing any SPF. Build up to this time if you are particularly sensitive and do this in the earlier or later part of the day when the sun isn't as intense.

Getting unblocked sun on every part of your body is important for vitamin D production and overall health. Try to expose as much skin as decently possible during those 10-20 minutes!

Listen up folks!

I've been taking NAC for a while now for lung and sinus congestion I've had for many years. I've tried several different brands and one thing I've noticed is the 1000mg forms ALWAYS work better for me and many of my amazing customers!

Here are some tips to get the most out of your oils! Most are sooo easy to do.

My favourite is to try to get oils in without even cooking them. I do this with dressing and sauces!

I always make my own salad dressing. My favourite is a classic vinaigrette because I kinda LOVE vinegar 🤷‍♀️

Dressings are so easy, take two minutes, and taste way better then bought dressing.

Another favourite is a home made pesto! The basics of pesto is

- basil/parsley
- oil
-garlic

That's literally all you need. Toss that with your favourite pasta, or use as a spread to really up your sandwich game! 🤤

If you use a high quality oil in these there is no heat damage at all!

Have you been told that you only need to worry about getting omega-3? That omega-6 is plentiful in your diet?

Technically, this is true.

All the vegetable oils added to packaged foods, and used in cooking have lots of omega-6.

However, what people often fail to realize is that any oil from packaged foods, and most oil that sits on the grocery store shelf has been altered.

How?

Oils are very sensitive to heat and light. If exposed to these they will become unstable.

This totally changes how they will function in your body.

When unstable they become pro-oxidants. This means they promote oxidative stress on your body. Oxidative stress promotes aging and disease.

In processing oils are usually exposed to a lot of heat and light. Then we cook with them or leave their clear bottles on the counter damaging them even more.

On top of that, manufacturers often hydrogenate oils in order to prolong their shelf life or to change its consistency.

Hydrogenation forces more hydrogen to be bonded to the molecule.

This completely changed their chemical structure and thus completely changes them from a healthy omega to a substance your body isn't meant to ingest.

Again. Pro-oxidant.

All this to say that yes we often eating lots of things that originally contained healthy omega-6.

But by the time it land in our grocery cart, and by the time we make food with it...it isn't providing nearly as much of those benefits we discussed in yesterday's post.

On Sunday we'll be looking at ways to get those healthy fats in while limiting their damage.

5. Do you like a glass of wine or a beer with supper or in the evening?

Do you find it helps you relax and even helps you fall asleep?

This is a comment side effect of alcohol. Because it may help you fall asleep you might think that intaking a little alcohol is a good think.

However, alcohol actually gives you a less restful sleep. Alcohol decreases REM sleep. REM - rapid eye movement - is the part of sleep that is essential for learning, retaining and making memories, and other neural connections that are essential for mental wellbeing.

Having a little alcohol may help you fall sleep. But it can prevent your system from getting the proper rest and repair you need. Over time this can have severe consequences on your brain and mental health and make you feel less rested.

Maybe try swapping for some calming tea.

4. Get sunlight around sunset and reduce light sources after.

We all know by now that blue light from electronics and house lights inhibit melatonin release.

Getting sunlight within 1 hour before sunset actually helps reduce the effects of blue light after sunset!

Do you know what that means?

It mean if you watch the sunset your body will be more willing to produce melatonin even with some exposure to blue light from electronics, house lights, and lamps.

Does this mean you can stare at your phone all evening or turn all your house lights on and still get proper melatonin release?

No. Absolutely not!

But it is practically impossible to not turn some lights on in the evening or to never look at your phone after the sun goes down.

Particularly in the winter months.

So if you are still trying to reduce light sources getting outside or looking out the window for a few minutes around sunset will help reduce the effects of what light you do get after!

Getting all the natural melatonin we can is the goal!

3. What would you do if you needed to cool down? Obviously, take a hot shower right!? No? Well, actually it's true.

Relating to our conversation yesterday, a hot shower helps you fall asleep in two ways:

1. Your body is taking action all the time to keep your body at a particular temperature 24/7. This particular temp is slightly different for everyone and changes slightly based on what time of day and month it is (monthly changes mostly apply to women).

At night your body needs to be cooler to sleep. Taking a hot shower clearly increases your body's temp. Don't worry you weren't wrong about that!

This increase in temp. tells your body that it needs to quickly adjust and cool down to bring it to that ideal night temp. A sudden increase in heat essentially pushes your body to cool down much quicker then it normally would to prepare yourself for sleep.

2. Hot water is relaxing! It relaxes our muscles, our mind, and just makes us feel all mellow. Sleep won't come easily if your body and mind are all tensed up!

So, take a hot shower tonight! You'll get relaxed, then cool enough to sleep well.
