HEALTH ALERT: Gel Nail Ingredient Banned in the EU — Still Legal in Canada
A chemical used in many gel nail polishes — TPO (trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide) — has now been banned in the European Union due to concerns it may cause reproductive harm.
The EU banned TPO based on animal studies showing potential effects at high doses, including reproductive toxicity. Even though it’s not banned in Canada, experts say this deserves attention.

🇪🇺 EU's Approach:
• Takes a hazard-based view: If there's credible evidence of harm (even in animals), it triggers immediate action.
• TPO is no longer allowed in any nail products sold or used in the EU.
🇨🇦 Canada's Approach:
• Uses a risk-based assessment.
• Health Canada asks:
➤ How much are consumers exposed to?
➤ Is the exposure level harmful in real-world use?
As of now, Health Canada has not found a risk but says it is “carefully reviewing” the EU’s findings and may update its position.

What This Means for You:
If you regularly get gel manicures or work in the nail industry, here’s how to reduce your risk:
✔️ Let trained professionals apply gel polish
✔️ Avoid getting liquid (uncured) gel on your skin
✔️ Ask your salon about TPO-free products
✔️ If you’re a nail tech, always wear gloves

Why This Matters:
Even though the long-term risk in humans isn't fully clear, proactive awareness helps protect your health. What’s considered “safe” can change as new research emerges.
