Council of Canadians, Red Deer and Area Chapter

Council of Canadians, Red Deer and Area Chapter Humanity is at a crossroads. Tragically, most governments support an economic system that pits unlimited growth above the vital needs of people and the planet.

The Council of Canadians Red Deer chapter is part of a national grassroots organization of committed individuals, like yourself, that work towards a greater society for all people, not just the elite. Economic globalization and unregulated market capitalism have divided the world – and Canada – into rich and poor as at no time in living history and endangered the ability of the planet to sustain life. The foundation of our work is the education and empowerment of people to fight for the values and policies we believe in. Our members, supporters and network of over 70 activist chapters create a powerful voice for social and environmental justice. We work to hold governments accountable and challenge the unbalanced power of corporations, promoting positive social change in Canada and the world. We believe this path must be founded on a deep understanding of our place within life and nature. We are the only species capable of profoundly altering the biosphere. That must inspire us to humility, not arrogance; to stewardship, not exploitation; and to social solidarity, not competition.

It's the age old strategy: create chaos, break things, and then push privatization as the solution. But the results are in on Smith's privatization experiments. The 2024 budget revealed that the failed privatization of our lab services cost Albertans at least $97 million, without delivering the promised cost savings or services needed.

Albertans value our public healthcare and have invested in it for generations. Watching it be undermined is insulting, expensive, and dangerous.

If you agree, please urgently send your local representative a message with our online tool. They need to know you don't support this.

BREAKING: 49 organizations have signed an open letter opposing the use of public funds for the construction and operation of the Pathways Alliance Carbon Capture pipeline and underground storage facility (CCS) — which is currently on the federal government’s list of proposed nation-building projects.

Pathways Alliance — a group of oil companies responsible for 95% of tar sands production — are trying to get $16.5 billion of our public dollars for a risky and ineffective CCS project. As people across Canada struggle with the climate and cost-of-living crisis, top polluters are asking us to foot the bill for their greenwashing scheme.

Nation-building projects should benefit communities and respect Indigenous rights, not give handouts to oil and gas corporations. We call on Prime Minister Carney to deliver real solutions, including investments in a renewable east-west energy grid, low-carbon public transportation, and affordable and energy-efficient housing.
