They say not to pick favourites but let’s be honest, we all have them. When it comes to herbs, Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) is mine.
Sweet, fresh, and gentle, I’ve spent more time with Melissa these past few years than with most of my friends, haha (but seriously).
There’s a chemical in her called neral that acts like an “oath” for the bees- a scent that guides them back to the hive. I’ve always found that fascinating, because energetically, I think Lemon Balm does the same for people: calls them home to themselves. Back to center. Back to ease.
(Who knew chemistry could be so poetic?)
Lemon Balm is a powerful nervine (it supports and regulates the nervous system) and a gentle anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), with calming, slightly sedative qualities. She’s a go-to for quieting the mind, softening anxious edges, and supporting sleep. She’s also antiviral, helpful both internally and topically for cold sores and other viral flare-ups.
The list goes on… Lemon Balm is a true powerhouse. Hot or iced, a cup of Melissa tea is always a good idea. 🐝🌱
