"The Hockey Canada case serves as a powerful and painful example for those of us committed to preventing sexual violence.

This event was preventable. The emotional cost, the years of legal proceedings, the involvement of judges and lawyers, the lasting trauma experienced by the victim E.M. and her family—and the consequences faced by the young players, who have now deeply impacted not only the victim’s life but their own—all of it could have been avoided.

While I respect the court’s decision, this case underscores a broader truth: prevention is not optional—it is essential. And it cannot fall on one person, one organization, or one institution alone. It requires collective responsibility—from government, private companies, parents, schools, sports organizations, and universities.

Prevention is possible, but only if we invest in education, enforce accountability, and create cultures where respect, consent, and safety are non-negotiable.

The Hockey Canada case should not just be remembered—it should be a turning point."

This month come and see our Red Deer Arts Council Muskoka chair and the others that have been made for the and Red Deer Arts Council fundraiser. Red Deer Arts Council and the Sendero Center have joined forces with local artists and a local woodworker to bring the community this event of art and charity. These wonderful hand built and hand painted chairs will be on display at the Gasoline Alley Farmers Market starting July 25th. They can be bid on online at galabid.com/rdac-sendero. Come and see the amazing work of your fellow Red Deer citizens this month at the Gasoline Alley Farmers Market, and the Hootenanny in Heritage Square. And if you can't make it to see them in person, take a peak at our social media and website to see what is up for auction. Don’t miss out!
