🧠 Concussions are more serious than many realize—and early action makes all the difference. When in doubt, sit them out. Check out this important post on concussion awareness and management from our Collegiate Sports Medicine Olds team. ⬇️
How's your head?
A concussion can be defined as a traumatic brain injury induced by a direct blow to the head, face, neck, or somewhere else on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head. Symptoms may appear immediately, or take up to several hours to present (see second image for common symptoms). The golden rule for immediate concussion management is, when in doubt sit them out.
As a parent or coach, if you see an athlete take a questionable head or body contact, you can make the choice to sit them. Athletes removed from play immediately recover an average of 3 days sooner than those with a delayed removal.
Additionally, youth aged 14-17 are particularly susceptible to second impact syndrome, a condition that occurs when a brain that is not fully healed from concussion, is impacted a second time, leading to excessive brain bleeding, and in 50% of cases, death within 2-5 minutes.
Its not to say that youth shouldn't participate in contact sport. But as a whole, we need to work together to spread awareness about concussions and concussion management. Remember that youth sport is just that, youth sport. Its better to take the time to fully recover from a concussion, than to suffer the consequences later in life. By referring young athletes (and adults!) with suspected concussions to physicians, physiotherapists, or athletic therapists with appropriate training in concussion management, you can set them up on the right track for returning to sport.
