Of anything you can have, hold, or carry; nothing is more precious than your health. Easy to lose, it’s always in need of maintenance and care. When you have it, you forget about it. You carry it in your front pocket like loose change. You spend it on trivial things. A greasy burger and fries. A boozy night on the town. There will inevitably be a time where your hand reaches in and there’s nothing left.
Life is to be lived. It is not to be daintily stepped through. You need to go out there and experience and enjoy the world around you. Good health allows you to interact with the world and the people in it. Poor health is limiting. Your world shrinks into smaller and smaller pieces. You can’t walk in the countryside due to arthritis. You can’t eat that meal due to diabetes. You can’t remember who that is due to cognitive decline. Having a broad and thick base of health as you transition through the stages of life allows for a better quality of life. There’s too much out there that we have little control over. One might even say that the idea we have any control is ludicrous. However, there’s some things we can do that can build and add to the foundation of health. Brick by brick. Stone by stone.
It is arduous, tedious work. There’s sweat and heavy lifting involved. Slowly but surely, the foundation you build and maintain will keep you upright and mobile for years to come. I found this out too quickly, too abruptly, but I got lucky. I’m back to being able to stack the stones that got knocked over and pack some more on top.
Get out there. Get moving. Make the change you know you need to make.
