When I began my own genealogical journey back in 2009, I had some significant obstacles in my way. I spent my childhood thousands of kilometers from my extended family, and there were few to no oral histories that could fill in the blanks in our tree. I'm the daughter of an immigrant, and only one of my Canadian ancestors lived and died in the same place they were born. But over time, very slowly

but surely, I pieced together the little bits of information I could find and eventually got to where I am now. Along the way, I discovered so many lost stories of courage, hardship, and adventure - from my Great-Great-Grandma Elizabeth who was born in a Welsh colony in Argentina and immigrated to Southern Saskatchewan, to my impoverished African Great-Great-Grandma Hannah who was taken from the streets of Brighton, England and sent to Canada alone in 1872 as British Home Child.
