Why does my pet need anesthesia for a veterinary dental cleaning?

Anesthesia is necessary for several reasons:
▪️Safety first - From your pet's perspective, a dental cleaning involves a team of strangers with bright lights and pointy instruments near their face. Anesthetizing your pet keeps your pet and veterinary team safe while also preventing unnecessary stress and anxiety for your companions.
▪️Stay still! — The veterinary team needs your pet to remain perfectly still so they can thoroughly examine their mouth and remove plaque and tartar.
▪️Going the distance — If your pet is not anesthetized, the veterinary team can’t remove the bacteria under the gum line, where the most damage occurs. For a complete dental cleaning, which is needed for your pet’s health, anesthesia is required.

Non-anesthetic dentistry (NAD), also referred to as anesthesia-free dentistry, is a procedure in which the teeth are scaled and polished without the benefit of general anesthesia. NAD is considered not appropriate because of patient stress, injury, risk of aspiration, and lack of diagnostic capabilities. Because this procedure is intended to only clean the visible surface of the teeth, it may provide the pet owner with a false sense of benefit to their pet’s oral health.

❗️Did you know your rabbit and guinea pig's also require dental care?

Exotic pets like rabbits and guinea pigs may require dental care as well. Both, guinea pigs and rabbits have teeth that continue to grow throughout their lifetime.

With proper nutrition and growth, their teeth often wear down on their own but in some cases, these pets may develop a malalignment of their teeth. Pets with misaligned teeth typically present with weight loss, inappetence, issues with chewing, drooling or changes in food preference to softer, easier to chew foods.

When untreated, dental disease in these pets may also result in GI stasis due to excessive fur chewing/self-grooming, poor appetite, pain or lack of proper nutrition. The goal of treating dental disease in these pets is to relieve pain, improve their function, and allow the animal to eat comfortably!

❗️Why is dental care so important for your pet?

Most people brush their teeth daily and see their dentist twice a year. You may be surprised to know that your pet requires the same level of dental care. Dental disease is a serious infection that can wreak havoc throughout your pet’s body, including in their mouth, and may even spread to their vital organs.

Potential consequences include:
▪️Painful, bleeding gums — Oral bacteria irritate the gum tissue, leading to painful, swollen gums that may bleed when your pet eats or chews a toy.
▪️Loose or missing teeth — As the infection progresses and damages the tooth’s supporting structures, your pet’s teeth may become loose or fall out.
▪️Tooth root abscesses — If the bacteria invade the tooth root, they can cause an infection. In some cases, the abscess ruptures, causing a draining tract in your pet’s face or jaw.
▪️Oro-nasal fistula — Bacteria can also tunnel through the tissue between your pet’s mouth and nose, allowing food and saliva to enter your pet’s nasal cavity, which may result in a respiratory infection.
▪️Oral tumors — Chronic inflammation from dental disease increases a pet’s risk for oral tumors.
▪️Organ damage — Periodontal bacteria don’t limit themselves to your pet’s mouth. Left untreated, the infection enters the bloodstream and damages vital organs like the heart, kidneys, and liver.
