Continuing on with our hormone health series, today we’re diving into the small but mighty thyroid gland—a butterfly-shaped gland located in your neck that plays a huge role in how your body functions every day.

When the thyroid gets out of balance—either under-active/ Low (hypo) or overactive/ high (hyper)—you can feel it everywhere.

Also worth knowing: nestled within the thyroid are your parathyroid glands, which regulate calcium levels—critical for bones, muscles, and nerves.

The thyroid is deeply interconnected with many systems of the body—when it’s off, so is your energy, digestion, mood, and often your sense of self.

I am deeply honoured and humbled to have been named Naturopathic Doctor of the Year at this year’s Healing Skies Conference in Saskatoon.

This recognition means so much to me, especially as I reflect on 20 years of practicing naturopathic medicine — a journey that began with a deep desire to serve and support others on their healing paths.

Supporting the people of Regina and the broader Saskatchewan community has always been at the heart of my work. I believe in the power of naturopathic medicine to not only treat, but to empower — to help individuals reconnect with their bodies, trust their inner wisdom, and take an active role in their health and wellness.

I’m grateful to every patient who has entrusted me with their care, to the colleagues who continue to uplift and inspire me, to the board of the Saskatchewan Association of Naturopathic Doctors (SAND), and to everyone who attended this year’s Healing Skies Conference — both in person and virtually. Your support and dedication to this field mean the world to me.

The Pituitary Gland: The Boss of Your Hormones
Often called the “master gland,” the pituitary plays a key role in managing the entire endocrine system. It takes its cues from the brain (specifically the hypothalamus) and tells other glands — like the thyroid, adrenals, and ovaries — what to do.

When this tiny gland gets out of balance (from chronic stress, trauma, poor sleep, head injuries, or hormone-disrupting chemicals), it can throw off your entire system — affecting things like your energy, metabolism, mood, menstrual cycle, and more.

This is why in perimenopause and menopause, we pay close attention to how the pituitary is functioning — because it has a hand in everything.

In our modern world that values constant doing, we often lose touch with the simple power of being. The Sun Series Sound Baths invite us back into that ancient wisdom — to ground, nourish, and soothe our nervous and hormonal systems amidst the rush of life.

While Tara Semple celebrates with the Celts in Scotland, an incredible team of sound alchemists will carry the flame here at home.

✨ Winsome Kind will lead us in Mantra Magic — simple, beautiful mantras we can sing together.

This year marks 20 years of practicing Naturopathic Medicine for me — and with that milestone has come a lot of reflection. Many people have asked how I ended up in Regina and so I wanted to share my journey!

I feel such deep gratitude to be able to do this work in my hometown, surrounded by the prairies that have always held my heart.

The journey here hasn’t always been linear, but it’s been guided by something I trust deeply: inner wisdom. When we take the time to slow down and truly listen, that quiet inner voice has a way of leading us exactly where we need to be.

Often called the “master controller” of the endocrine system, the hypothalamus plays a crucial role in your hormonal health — and overall wellbeing.

This tiny yet mighty structure in the brain is neuroendocrine — meaning it bridges the nervous system (neurons & neurotransmitters) and the endocrine system (hormones). Think of it as a highly sensitive command center, constantly monitoring your internal and external environment, then telling your pituitary gland when to turn on or off key hormone signals.

As part of the limbic system (your primal “reptilian brain”), it also governs your instinctive reactions and emotions.

It’s also sometimes referred to as the “third eye” due to its deep connection to your internal awareness and intuitive rhythms.

When we talk about hormonal balance, we can’t ignore this incredible loop of communication between the brain and the body — and how easily it can be influenced by stress, lifestyle, and mindset.

This year marks 20 years since I graduated as a Naturopathic Doctor, and I continue to be deeply inspired by this work and the people I serve.

Naturopathic medicine is rooted in a belief I hold dearly — that healing is possible when we address the whole person, and look beyond symptoms to uncover the root cause of imbalance.

Whether I’m working with individuals navigating hormonal shifts, digestive concerns, chronic health conditions, or simply looking to feel more like themselves again — naturopathic care offers a powerful, compassionate, and evidence-informed path to wellness.

Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing a few reflections and insights on the incredible potential of this medicine to support:
✔️ Hormonal health
✔️ Digestive balance
✔️ Mental and emotional well-being
✔️ Chronic condition support
✔️ Sustainable energy & vitality
✔️ And preventative wellness for the long term

I’m also incredibly passionate about supporting and uplifting fellow NDs. That’s why I’m honoured to be one of the chairs of the SAND Healing Skies Conference, taking place May 30–June 1 in Saskatoon. This event brings together brilliant minds and open hearts to explore this year’s theme:
