Funeral Fact Friday ⚰️

Did you know that in most funeral traditions, the deceased is carried feet first?

This practice symbolizes the individual’s final journey — as though they are walking forward into eternity.

It also reflects long-standing Christian and military customs.

There are, however, special circumstances. For example, clergy members are often brought into the church head first, symbolizing that they are still leading their congregation.

At Zohr Family Funeral Home, we pay close attention to these details. Honour and tradition matter — and so does doing things properly.

We highly recommend the movie "The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet" for children and families grieving. After losing a twin from a tragic accident, young T.S. Spivet goes on a journey to Washington D.C. On his adventure, he learns how to begin healing and helps his family grieve the loss of their son.

Have you seen the movie? What did you think?

Funeral Fact Friday ⚰️

Did you know you can tell the head end of a casket — even when it’s fully closed?

Most modern caskets are designed with a split lid. The larger section indicates the head end.

You’ll also notice circular locks on the front of the casket and hinges on the back. In many cases:
• If you see the locks, the head end will be on the left.
• If you see the hinges, the head end will be on the right.

All of the caskets we receive from our Canadian manufacturer, Victoriaville & Co., include a sticker on the foot end for clear identification.

There is also a memory tube located on the foot end of the casket. This holds the name of the deceased along with important information such as the date of birth and date of death — and helps us quickly and respectfully confirm positioning.

Knowing the head and foot ends is especially important because, as a sign of respect and tradition, the deceased is typically transported feet first. In certain circumstances — such as a Catholic priest — the casket is brought into the church head first, reflecting longstanding religious customs.

It’s small details like these that funeral professionals are trained to notice — because every detail matters.

⚱️ Funeral Fact Friday— Embalming

Embalming is not mandatory by law in Ontario.

It is an option, often recommended by funeral directors when:
    •    A public visitation or viewing is planned, or
    •    There is a longer period of time between death and services.

Embalming does not stop natural decomposition — it simply slows the process, allowing for a more natural appearance during viewing.

Many families choose to privately view their loved one without embalming before cremation or burial, and this can be a meaningful, dignified experience.

Every family and every situation is different. Our role is to guide, educate, and support you in choosing what feels right.

When we lose someone we must learn not to live without them, but to live with the love they left behind.

A hearse carries more than a casket—it carries trust.

It represents one of the most important moments in a family’s journey—the final time their loved one is cared for and transported with dignity. Every detail matters, from how it is driven, to how it is presented, to the respect shown at every stop along the way.

That’s why we take great pride in our hearse—its cleanliness, its condition, and the care taken before every service. Because honouring a life means respecting every moment of it. 🕊️

Funeral Fact Friday ⚰️

Ever wondered how caskets are delivered?

Here’s a look at how we receive caskets from our manufacturer, Victoriaville & Co.

Caskets arrive on specially designed transport trucks that can safely carry up to 36 caskets at a time. Each truck is equipped with a rear lift, allowing caskets to be carefully transferred onto a church truck at our facility, where they are brought inside and respectfully prepared for a loved one.

Victoriaville & Co. manufactures our caskets and many of our urns right in Victoriaville, Québec. Their wooden caskets are made in Canada using responsibly sourced wood, with a strong focus on quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

We are proud to support Canadian-made products while caring for our community. 🇨🇦
