Finding a therapist who is a good fit can be exhausting and overwhelming. Consider these tips as you search and weigh your options (applicable in Ontario, Canada).

* Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health (hence why we need a doctor referral to see one). While they are technically qualified to provide talk therapy, most only offer short appointments and will focus on medication management.

** Counselling, while generally the most affordable option, differs somewhat from psychotherapy. Counsellors tend to focus on the present and use a short-term, solution-focused approach; psychotherapy tends to go deeper, consider the past as it relates to the present, and go on longer than counselling support.
