“I didn’t know you could do all that.”

Naturopathic medicine is one of the most misunderstood professions in healthcare — and honestly, we haven’t always done a great job of telling our own story.
So I hope to provide insight on this account. Save this if it’s helpful, and share it with someone who’s been looking for this kind of care (thoughtful, collaborative, integrative, and patient-centered). 🌱

Well. That was a year.

Last June I started my maternity leave, waddled into summer, and promptly had twins. (Plus a,5-year-old at home, because apparently I love a good challenge.)

July brought two tiny humans, winter brought real sleep deprivation, lots of solo parenting but still supported, and the kind of humbling that only new parenthood can deliver — even when it’s not your first time.

And now it’s spring. The mountains are doing that thing they do in March. And I’m ready to come back.

Here’s what I do: I help people figure out why they don’t feel well. Hormones, gut health, stress, weight, joint pain, kids’ health, etc, and yes — primary care, the kind most people don’t realize an ND can provide. I spend real time with you. I ask a lot of questions. I look for the thing underneath the thing.

I became an ND because of my mom — because I watched naturopathic care make a real difference when she was going through ovarian cancer, and I never forgot it.

I practice here because I love this community. Because small-town medicine means I know my patients. Because the Kootenays have a way of getting into your soul (ask me about tree planting sometime).

I’m booking again. In-person in Revelstoke, virtual across BC.

If you’ve been Googling your symptoms at midnight and coming up empty — or full of contradictory, anxiety-inducing results — come talk to an actual human who went to school for this and genuinely loves it. Also, if you just have a curiosity about me, what we can do, and more about our modalities, I offer a FREE 15min meet & greet.

I’d really love to see you. 🌿

Do you know we do skin scratch allergy testing? No need for long waits to get this done, it’s an easy and quick appointment to see which environmental allergens are affecting you and your health.
We can then pair this with SLIT. Sublingual Immunotherapy, where you take super low doses of your allergen over time until your response changes, often giving people relief from spring time allergies, hay fever, and even helping those enjoy the company of their favorite pets again.

The only cause of death that cannot be positively affected with strategic supplementation are accidents - the 4th leading cause of death in Canada.

In explaining the situation, I will not mince my words.

This is a blatant and strategic policy to limit your right to access and choose natural health products and supplements for you and your loved ones.

It will be positioned as a safety issue.

And yet…

Canada is already one of the safest and most tightly regulated supplement markets in the world.

This policy will limit what you can access on Canadian shelves.

This policy will limit the tools that your naturopathic doctor, TCM or functional medicine practitioner can access and recommend.

This policy will drive more people into an already burdened system.

This policy will force people to order supplements online from less regulated jurisdictions.

There is no path in which this policy moves the needle on improving chronic disease in Canada.

This policy is ill-conceived.

This policy crossed my line in the sand.

I will be speaking more on this issue and providing our practitioner community with resources to reach out to their MPs, speak to their patients and advocate to their own followers.

Canadians need health leadership and innovation beyond expensive pharmaco-dependent healthcare.

Please Share this post and consider writing a letter to your MP. DM me your email and I will send you a pre-written letter for your MP.
Thank you for this

Did you know that there's a strong connection between your gut and your brain? 🧠👉🌱

Research has shown that the gut-brain axis plays a crucial role in many aspects of our health, including our mood, immune system, and even our cognitive function. So what exactly is the gut-brain connection, and how does it work? 🤔

Well, the gut and the brain are connected by a complex network of nerves, hormones, and biochemical signals. The gut actually has its own nervous system, known as the enteric nervous system, which contains over 100 million neurons and is sometimes referred to as our "second brain." 🤯

Through this network, the gut and the brain communicate with each other constantly. For example, when we eat something, the gut sends signals to the brain to let it know that we're full. Similarly, the brain can send signals to the gut to stimulate or suppress digestive activity depending on our emotional state. 😋😔

This is why our gut health can have such a big impact on our overall well-being. If our gut is inflamed, damaged, or imbalanced, it can lead to a range of physical and mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and autoimmune diseases. On the other hand, taking care of our gut through a healthy diet and lifestyle can help to support our brain health and overall health. 🙌

So the next time you're feeling down, anxious, or stressed, remember that taking care of your gut is just as important as taking care of your brain. Eat plenty of fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, avoid processed and sugary foods, and consider taking a probiotic or other gut-supporting supplements. Your gut (and your brain) will thank you! ❤️🌱

🤧 Histamine is a fascinating molecule that is essential for our body's functions, but when overproduced, or under-metabolized, it can cause significant health issues. Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is a condition that leads to an excess of histamine production, possibly causing symptoms like hives, itching, as well as symptoms affecting organ systems such as skin, respiration, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular. Histamine intolerance is a condition where the body has difficulty breaking down and eliminating histamine from the body, leading to an accumulation of histamine in the bloodstream. This condition can cause symptoms similar to MCAS.
🧐
To understand histamine issues better, we need to know about the four different types of histamine receptors - H1, H2, H3, and H4. Each receptor has a specific location and plays a unique role in the body's response to histamine.
For example, the H1 receptor causes itching and swelling, while the H2 receptor is involved in regulating digestion and blood pressure. The H3 receptor helps regulate mood, and the H4 receptor modulates the immune response. This is also why histamine often ends up being a partial player for those with confusing and layered symptoms.
🧐
By understanding the roles of the different histamine receptors, researchers can develop targeted treatments that can improve the quality of life of those with MCAS and other histamine-related conditions.
🥓
People with histamine intolerance often have to follow a low histamine diet, which involves avoiding high histamine foods like fermented foods, aged cheeses, and cured meats, to manage their symptoms. Certain medications and supplements can also exacerbate histamine intolerance symptoms, so it's essential to work closely with a healthcare provider to manage this condition.
🧐
So, next time you hear about histamine, remember that it's not just one thing but a complex and essential part of our body's functioning!

Prices of everything from groceries to gas are going up, and it's becoming harder to make ends meet.
Eating healthy on a budget can be a struggle, and there are definitely certain situations where families are severely struggling. During these times it is important to do what we can to support community outreach and things like the food bank. For those who are trying to maintain as healthy of a diet as they can, above are some tips for eating on a budget.

If you are needing motivation to maintain healthy eating, here are some reasons to help stick to your budget.
🍎 Eating healthy can reduce your risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. By investing in your health now, you may be able to save money on healthcare costs down the line.
🍎 When you eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, you're more likely to feel full and satisfied. This can help you avoid overeating or snacking on unhealthy foods, which can save you money and improve your overall well-being.
🍎 Cooking at home and meal prepping can be a fun and rewarding way to take control of your diet and try new recipes. By learning how to cook healthy meals on a budget, you'll develop valuable skills that can benefit you for a lifetime.
🍎 Finally, by prioritizing healthy eating in your budget, you're sending a message to yourself and your community that good nutrition is important. You may inspire others to make positive changes in their own lives, which can have a ripple effect of health and happiness.
So, let's make healthy eating a priority, even in these tough economic times. With a little planning and creativity, you can eat well on a budget and reap the benefits of a nourishing diet. 🍴💰💪
