I am excited to be offering a special Pelvis and Lumbar Spine treatment. Using Myofascial Mobilization, we will tackle hip, knee and lower back pain. Improving your overall mobility!

Have you heard of a tensegrity structure?

Imagine a system of components that do not touch directly but are held together through a network of compression and tension strings or tendons. Perfect harmony is required to achieve system balance. Our entire body acts much like these tensegrity structures.

Our pelvis is the “Keystone”. Meaning that it is arguably the most important component to balance the system.

Knowing this we can become curious about the true cause of our knee and foot pain, plantar fasciitis, shoulder and neck pain and even head aches to name a few. Poor pelvis alignment radiates throughout the body.

STRESS - Don’t just rub it in.

Imagine a shaggy carpet and you spill a drink on it. In this example your body is the shaggy carpet and the drink is the stressor. You could just rub the split drink into the carpet, it will dry and maybe you don’t see it as much but the stain is still there.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) helps to lift and remove the stain.

Let’s lift those stains together.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy & The Stress Response

This technique can be very effective at treating overwhelming feelings, anxiety, panic and trouble sleeping.

These symptoms are associated with the Sympathetic Nervous System, the 'fight or flight' response. An extremely stressful experience or exposure to stress over a long period of time can cause us to get stuck in that state. Once trapped in that cycle it can be tricky to release.

Let me explain this more. Imagine your nervous system has a gas and brake pedal.

1. The Sympathetic Nervous System (Fight or Flight) is the gas pedal
2. The Parasympathetic System (Rest and Digest) is the brake pedal

We need both to drive. If we only use our gas pedal then we are going to crash. If we only use our brake we aren’t going to go anywhere. We need both to function. Same goes with our nervous system.

If we are using to much gas or to much brake our body will respond with issues like trouble sleeping, poor digestion, pain or fatigue, depression, anxiety or panic.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) helps the body regulate the gas and brake pedal so they can function optimally together.

3 ways that Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) can help in Concussion Recovery.

1. BCST promotes circulation of cerebral spinal fluid, this is the fluid that baths the brain and spinal cord. It circulates nutrients and chemicals filtered from the blood and removes waste products from the brain.

2. Surrounding the brain there are 3 membranous layers, the dura, arachnoid and pia mater. When there is impact to these membranous layers, they can become compromised. BCST works to promote health and restore mobility in these layers.

3. When there is trauma, like an impact to the nervous system it can cause dysregulation. Regulation of the nervous system is important because both the parasympathetic (rest & digest) and the sympathetic system (arousal, fight or flight) are needed for optimal function. BCST helps the body regulate.

I always love hearing Dr. Ayles speak about Optometry.
1 because of her passion and vast knowledge.
2 because I am an anatomy nerd. Did you know that you can detect systemic issues from eye exams?!

Today is World Diabetes Day- do you know how diabetes and your eyes are connected?

A comprehensive eye exam conducted by an optometrist can not only lead to early detection of diabetes, but it can also reveal the effects of poor diabetes management to existing diabetics.

‘Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in Canada. People with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts at a young age and are twice as likely to develop glaucoma, but diabetes affect on the retina is the main threat to vision’ - Canadian Diabetes Association

Massage tables seem to have this magic power - it's like the minute you lay down your body starts to;

- Soften
- Deepen breath
- Slow down heart rate
- Digest - Tummy sounds

This is the activation of the Vagus nerve - the gut-brain connection.

THE VAGUS NERVE

A seemingly never-ending branching nerve that connects most of our major organs to our brain 🧠.

It’s the longest cranial nerve in our body, one for the right side and one for the left. And is largely responsible for the connection for its role as a mediator between thinking and feeling, you know our “gut feeling.”

The vagus nerve is the “queen” of the parasympathetic nervous system. The “rest and digest” or the nerve. So the more we do things to activate the nerve (like deep ), the most we combat the effects of its opposer, the sympathetic nervous system - the “fight or flight”, rushing around, have to do something, releasing one.

A few other functions of the vagus nerve, just to name a few:
▪️slows your heart rate and respiration.
▪️lowers blood pressure.
▪️helps with calmness and relaxation.
▪️controls involuntary muscles in the digestive system, therefore, aiding digestion.
▪️taste sensation.
▪️movement function for the muscles in the neck responsible for swallowing and speech.
▪️gut-brain communication.
▪️reduces inflammation.

Friends say they "see me smiling through my helmet" while riding... and falling off my snowmobile. 😂

If you ask me, the ULTIMATE SELF CARE is what you do for FUN!

It is important to have balance in giving and receiving. We achieve that balance through actions like;

- A Massage or Craniosacral treatment
- Reading a book with a cup of tea
- Yoga or meditation
- Walking your dog
- Healthy food

These actions help to keep our cups full. But what adds the cherry on top and sparkle to life is HAVING FUN!!

Tell me what you do for fun!

We use to think that pain was relative to tissue damage. We now know that it not true.

Pain is the body’s response to an action/thought it perceives as not safe or threatening.

Do you have a pain story? Are there actions you avoid?

The more we orient to what feels “good” the more our body feels at ease resulting in less pain signals.

How we describe pain to ourselves is really important. When we are sensitised, the stories and metaphors that increase the sense of danger inside us feed the flames of pain. Much more than the events in the tissues.

Try exploring new words and stories that fit the feelings you are experiencing. Common danger messages such as ‘I am old’, ‘I am damaged’, ‘My back is vulnerable’, ‘I have no control’, ‘I should be careful of moving’ rarely help.

Try new, more accurate stories, where you celebrate your ability to act and move as much as possible. Appreciate pain is not a ‘flare up’ but a temporary increase in activity in the danger sensing systems.

Titration is a technique we use in Craniosacral Therapy to help the body to orient to health and decompact intense sensation.

Where do you feel health in your body? What are your resources?

All feelings are negotiable. Even the most intense feelings of pain, fear, tiredness and, even air-hunger (the urge to breath), are perceptions inside you. Alex Hutchinson in his book ‘Endure’ shows that our supposed physiological limits are deeply dependent on context and prior learning.

With practice, it is possible to modulate, and eventually shift, even the most stuck and scary feelings inside you. This is a radical concept, but it is a consistent theme emerging from researchers in pain, tiredness, breathing and anxiety.

Start by learning to feel the baseline sensations of the size, shape and weight of your body. Establish feelings of safety and health, even if they are only hinted at or feel very far away. Dig deep, it can be tricky if you have been disconnected from feeling for a while.

Try to remember peak experiences in you life. How do you know what joy and ease feel like? You are not alone if finding simple words for sensations is hard at the start, most of my clients struggle initially!

Once you have a baseline of resourcing feelings, be curious about the scary, difficult stuff. Go slow, take breaks and always make sure you have part of your awareness anchored in your resources.

Don’t grab on to the feelings and don’t try and change them. Just be curious; ‘This is how my body feels right now’, ‘This is me right now’. Appreciate that your body and brain are working hard to protect you, but sometimes they get stuck with noisy alarm signals and difficult action patterns.

Try negotiating with what you feel from a place of curiosity rather than fear. Paradoxically, just noticing intense sensations from a safe perspective is frequently enough for them to change. Good luck, you might be surprised.
