OSHA requires product manufacturers to provide salon owners with safety data sheets (SDSs) 1 for the products they buy that contain hazardous chemicals. Employers must make these SDSs available to you. Your employer must also train you so that you understand the chemicals’ potential hazards and how to use the products safely.

In general, an SDS must provide the following information:
• Hazardous ingredients in the product
• How you can be exposed to the ingredients
• Health and safety risks you face when using the product
• Steps for safely using and storing the product, including what to do in emergencies

It is extremely important that you block off the appropriate time after each service/client to properly decontaminate the room or station that will include equipment and tools used.

This has always been the best practices when it came to infection control and should continue all the time regardless of a pandemic or not. With the pandemic your actions to clean and disinfect were more heighten as the seriousness of the spread of COVID. But we should always take the seriousness of cleaning and disinfecting as viruses will always be a part of our life.

Do your part to maintain a clean & disinfectant salon/spa and keep the safety of your clients a top priority!

A Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan is important because it helps protect you and your workers from exposures to blood and other potentially infectious materials. ☑️Containers for contaminated sharps must be puncture-resistant. ☑️Sides and the bottom must be leakproof. ☑️Appropriately labeled or color-coded red to warn everyone that the contents are hazardous. ☑️Must be closable (that is, have a lid, flap, door, or other means of closing the container), ☑️Kept upright to keep the sharps and any liquids from spilling out of the container. ☑️Must be replaced routinely and not be overfilled, which can increase the risk of needlesticks or cuts. ☑️Reusable sharps containers must not be opened, emptied, or cleaned manually or in any other manner that would expose workers to the risk of sharps injury. ☑️Employers also must ensure that reusable sharps that are contaminated are not stored or processed in a manner that requires workers to reach by hand into the containers where these sharps have been placed. Germs can live on surfaces for up to 48 hours. ➡️Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer often throughout the day. ➡️Disinfect common surfaces such as doorknobs and light switches, keyboard and telephone. ➡️Cover your mouth when you cough, and sneeze into a tissue or the inside of your sleeve or elbow, not your hands. ➡️Keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth to keep germs from entering your body. ➡️If you become sick, stay at home.
