Healthcare Providers, are you familiar with the UHN ECHO educational series? ECHO, short for Extension of Community Healthcare Outcomes, offers weekly online learning sessions connecting primary healthcare providers with specialists. These sessions cover liver disease, concussion, chronic pain, and rheumatology.

The January 9th session was led by Dr. Charles Tator, a renowned neurosurgeon at Toronto Western Hospital and Director of the Canadian Concussion Centre. The session was also moderated by Dr. Lesley Ruttan, a registered psychologist, member of the Canadian Concussion Centre who has co-developed and co-facilitated concussion education & support workshops for 10 years.

Key takeaways:

- Exercise plays a crucial role in recovery by boosting chemical production, resulting in better recovery from concussion
- Imaging techniques may not always diagnose concussions, making symptom awareness important.
- Post-car accident, whiplash and concussions commonly occur together
-Canada sees over 400,000 concussion cases annually.
-Proper assessment and treatment by trained healthcare providers are essential.
-Discussion on the terminology of Concussion vs. mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury).
-mTBI may downplay the intensity of a concussion, often lasting longer than 30 days- persistent concussion may be better terminology
-Uncertainty about why children under 7 and adults over 80 experience more severe concussion effects.
