Flu and Viral Infection Prevention - Chinese Medicine Way
There are many scary news about a corona virus case being confirmed in Toronto. But please REMAIN CALM.
This post is NOT to add fuel to people who are already feeling fearful, but to provide some ease that there are many simple things you can do as preventative measures.
There you go.
1. Hand washing
2. Gargle with Green Tea
- This is a practice I did when I was a nurse at a long term care facility in Japan. We helped patients clean their teeth/mouths with green tea. It is refreshing too. Make sure to use freshly brewed one.
3. Dietary Measure (good digestion = good immunity)
- Avoid anything heavy to digest; dairy, fatty food, deep fried food, sweets like cake, cookies etc, high in refined carbohydrates, or highly processed food.
- Avoid raw cold food such as smoothies
- Incorporate cooked vegetables and proteins
- Emphasize these vegetables; Green onion, ginger, garlic, cilantro, Daikon radish - These make a really good soup too!
- Lots of Vitamins; ie. Vit B complex, C, D...
- Take plenty of fluids
- Take extra fibre for a daily GOOD bowel movement
4. Fluids
- Green tea is protective to pathogens invading
- You may add citrus peel (ie. tangerine) in your tea
- Herbal tea with cinnamon (twig), mint, mugwort, fennel
5. Humidifier
- Keep your room moist, which the virus doesn’t like
6. Aromatherapy
- Tea Tree, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Patchouli, Cinnamon, Clove, Rosemary etc.
7. Gentle exercises
- NO vigorous exercise that induces excessive sweating (Edited; Jan 27 2020; If you have a puffy mucusy tendency in general, sauna is recommended. If you are dry and thirsty, then don't.)
- Enjoy stretches, yoga etc. Instead
8. Breathing exercises
- If your breathing is shallow, work on inhaling air into the lungs
- Breathe through the nose
9. Dry Brushing
10. Keep Warm
- Keep your neck and ankles from cold air
11. Laughter
- A good laughter boosts our immune system
- Take an advantage and have a fun chat with your friends, families, or loved ones!
- Watch funny movies
12. Rest Well
- If you are tired, take extra nap
- Take it easy
13. Sleep Hyegine
- Go to bed before 11pm
- DO NOT bring your phone into the bedroom
- Keep your room complete dark for better quality of sleep
14. Remain Calm
No need to do them all if you feel overwhelmed!
Do what you can. Every bit helps, right? 🙂
But, if you are feeling weak, need some help with immune boosting, or need additional support, consider having acupuncture sessions with a Registered Acupuncturist. We are pro at preventative measures like this. We are fully trained to offer such acupuncture treatment from 2000+hrs of acupuncture specific education.

Fantastic visual demo ~ Yes we can help your skin tremendously with Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Acne (Fen Ci 粉刺) is when your hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells.
In TCM, it’s usually due to:
✔️Excess internal heat
✔️Stagnation / congestion
Ok, so where’s this coming from? We also check the colour, size, location, lesions, pain and other symptoms to find out the root cause.
I love sharing my work and helping people now how to take care of themselves. Ive been sharing Traditional Chinese Medicine's wisdom in Toronto's Financial district on a regular basis. It's encouraging to see companies bring wellness into work places.

Acupuncture is brilliant, specially for new moms and moms to be.
“Meghan has been having regular acupuncture sessions to help her unwind and relax. It’s brilliant for the blood circulation and boosting blood flow to the uterus. She plans to use acupuncture right up to her due date,”
Acupuncture, a doula, and, yes, hypno-birthing will all play a role in the duchess’s birth plans.
Different approaches have beneficial effects.
“A recent study found that acupressure could help alleviate mulitple symptoms women often experience after breast cancer treatment”
Acupressure is a technique used in traditional Chinese medicine. It’s similar to acupuncture, but without the needles. It involves the application of pressure with the fingers, thumbs, or a device to specific points on the body.
Evidence for Acupuncture is Growing Exponentially
Research into acupuncture as a medical treatment has grown exponentially in the past 20 years, increasing at twice the rate of research into conventional biomedicine. Over this period, there have been over 13,000 studies conducted in 60 countries, including hundreds of meta-analyses summarizing the results of thousands of human and animal studies. A wide-variety of clinical areas have been studied, including pain, cancer, pregnancy, stroke, mood disorders, sleep disorders and inflammation, to name a few.

I'm glad they are looking to measuring pain. But as an Acupuncturist I disagree that if we can't "measure" pain we can't "fix" it.
https://www.ctvnews.ca/mobile/health/scientists-seek-ways-to-finally-take-a-real-measure-of-pain-1.4247681
Is the pain stabbing or burning? On a scale from 1 to 10, is it a 6 or an 8? But with no measurement scale, the aching that one person rates a 7 might be a 4 to someone who's more used to serious pain or genetically more tolerant.

The guidelines on low back pain are clear: drugs and surgery should be the last resort.
A recent series on low back pain by the global medical journal The Lancet shows doctors often overlook recommended treatments, such as advice to stay active and to exercise.
This is excellent. We can reduce pain with Acupuncture, and this makes it all more sense.
Nice infographic! 👍🏻
A Toronto MD actually went for a treatment and was able to get past his resistance to Acupuncture:
"In December, the American Pain Society endorsed the use of acupuncture for chronic pain, suggesting that this ancient technique could be part of a new, holistic approach within the context of Western medicine. When a frustrated patient, walking the dark path toward opioid addiction, asks me if they should try acupuncture, at least now I can tell them it’s worth a shot."
I had often heard of acupuncture as an alternative treatment for pain, but I had dismissed it. But I also knew that my patients deserved an alternative to opioids.

A "new" organ discovered, hidden in plain sight. It's actually not new. It's perhaps the extra organ we have in Chinese Medicine which is called " San Jiao" or "Triple Heater". Love it when science proves ancient theories. This partially explains how and why Acupuncture works.
The interstitium, scientists found, is under our skin and between our organs. Understanding it may eventually help treat disease.
