How to prevent back pain from shoveling snow?
Winter has arrived and we cannot avoid shoveling snow BUT we can avoid injuries if we follow some safety tips. Thanks to one of our staff who is demonstrating what you SHOULD and what you SHOULD NOT do while shoveling.

1) Do not twist
2) Do not bend using your back
3) Do not stand with feet close together
4) Do push snow forward
5) Do use legs and bend from hips/knees
6) Do lift small amounts and drop snow
We hope you take some time to warm up before you pick up your shovel. Taking breaks and pacing your shoveling may save you from low back pain later. Stay safe, stay warm and enjoy the winter season!!!

Have you ever wondered…. What is physiotherapy? What does a physiotherapist do? Will physiotherapy help me? How? Many times doctors refer their patients to “physiotherapy” to recover from an injury, after a surgery, if they have weakness, or maybe just to get stronger and have more balance.

Our Resident Physiotherapist, Rozina Farista, writes about the 5 things you need to know about Physiotherapy.

Hi, my name is Dr. Kaw and chiropractic is my passion. I graduated from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2005, and am also certified in Acupuncture.

My focus is in rehabilitation, prevention, return-to-work and overall wellness. In addition, I am a strong believer of proper posture, nutrition, good habits and body awareness.

Let me get to know you, help you return to the activities that you enjoy, and achieve your full potential.

When patients tell me how much better they feel or how much of a difference treatment has made, it always makes my day.

But what makes me really happy is when you do the stretches and exercises that I recommend

What is an orthotic?
Orthotics are custom made inserts that fit into shoes to support the foot while standing and walking. They are prescribed for: chronic foot and knee/hip pain, to improve performance of athletes and to support spinal conditions like scoliosis.

Facts about Feet:
1) 75% of Canadians will have foot problems during their lives
2) 25% of the bones of your body are in your FEET
3) the average person takes 8000 to 10,00 steps per day
4) 60-70 % of people with diabetes have nerve damage (poor sensation of their feet) which can lead to amputation
5) Many foot conditions are caused by poorly fitting shoes

How do orthotics reduce foot pain?
Orthotics are designed to correct or accommodate biomechanical or foot deformities (bunions, hammertoes, flatfoot, or high arches) and a variety of joint and muscle conditions (arthritis) to improve walking patterns and manage pain. They redistribute the force and pressure placed on muscles and joints which decreases the strain and pain in our feet and the rest of our body.

Do I need a prescription to order orthotics?
Answer: Some insurance companies require a prescription but many others do not. It’s best to call your insurance company and ask if you need a prescription and also ask who can dispense (take your scan and give you the orthotics once they are made) the orthotics.

ATTENTION!!!
If you want to order orthotics and receive them in the year 2022 then you must order them from our office by DECEMBER 15, 2022. Act now - make an apt to have your feet scanned as soon as possible so we can place your order and you can receive them this year. Do not delay as we have no control over this date.

Remembrance Day: November 11, 2022
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
scarce heard amid the guns below.

16th Ave Chiropractic & Physiotherapy was the chosen provider of Chiropractic and Physiotherapy services at this year's inaugural DanceSport Grand Prix Canada Title held at the Markham Pan Am Centre. It was such an honour for me to be there live offering treatment during the competition. I have met so many talented international dancers this weekend and this is what i learned
1) Posture is important both on and off the dance floor - it was amazing to see such good use of core and back muscles. I always teach about the importance of posture - its great to go to the gym for 2 hours but then PLEASE do not sit slouched in your chair at work and undo all your hard work.
2) Dancing requires fluid movements of the spine - this is why so many dancers have regular chiropractic and physiotherapy care to make sure the joints in their spine are all moving well and this allows them to perform their best.
3) At this level of performance daily training means repetition of movements and muscles need daily stretching and strengthening so the dancers can spin quickly, lean backwards without falling and perform fancy footwork precisely

I know i will never be able to perform at this level but when my dancers come for treatment i can be excited to hear their stores and experiences!!

If you are having any pain or restriction in movement or want to strengthen your muscles for your own sport - give us a call. We have treated hundreds of athletes from all sports.

Clients with asthma, COPD and anxiety can benefit from Diaphragmatic Breathing. This breathing technique will help you use the diaphragm correctly while breathing.

Diaphragmatic breathing helps to:
• Reduce your blood pressure.
• Reduce your heart rate.
• Helps you relax
• Use less effort and energy to breathe.
• Improving muscle function during exercises and preventing strain.
• Increases oxygen levels in your blood.
Watch the video to see an example of diaphragmatic breathing.

8 Steps in Soft Tissue Injury treatment.

As a sports medicine rehabilitation clinic here in Richmond Hill, we have been treating soft tissue injuries in athletes for more than 40 years. Over the years, we have treated hundreds of athletes, such as dancers, soccer players, gymnasts, hockey players and tennis players, to mention a few. When our athletes come to us, they first want to know what type of injury they have. Then they want to know how to treat it. And finally, they want to know if they can return to play.

We will start this post by sharing a real patient story (with the name changed) of a soccer player who suffered a soft tissue ankle injury and what she went through before she returned to play. Then, we will explain what a soft tissue injury is and how it is different from other injuries. Finally, we list 8 steps you can use to treat your soft tissue injury at home in the link here: https://chirophysio16th.com/how-to-treat-a-soft-tissue-injury-using-these-8-steps/

Tailbone pain isn't fun. Here is what you should do if your coccyx is hurting.

The coccyx is the small bone (actually a few small bones fused together) at the very base of the spine. After the lumbar spine (lower back) is the large bone called the sacrum. At the very bottom tip of the sacrum is the coccyx. Discomfort in the coccyx is known as "coccygodynia" or "coccydynia."

Because the coccyx is such a small bone and isn't very well protected by muscle or fat, it is very vulnerable to injury.

Dr. Horowitz has been treating tailbone injuries since 1982. Patients come from all over Canada to seek his advice and treatment for their coccyx discomfort. Having your coccyx discomfort evaluated and treated as soon as possible is important.

Don't follow the "it will go away on its own" rule. It might go away on its own, but if it doesn't, it might be too late to fully fix the problem correctly.

Dr. Horowitz is very experienced in diagnosing and treating all coccyx problems. Your treatment options will be explained to you, often after x-rays are seen. Often treatment can begin on the day of your first consultation.

Don't ignore the ache.

Call (905) 709-7147 for an appointment to start your treatment today.

Today marks National Day for Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Today we commemorate and honour the children who never returned home, the survivors of the residential schools, their families and communities and promote the concept of ‘Every Child Matters’.

The orange shirt symbolizes the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

Our office team acknowledges the pain and trauma facing Indigenous communities every day and is committed to sharing the truth and working towards healing and reconciliation with Indigenous communities.

Golf is a challenging sport. Your back, hips and joints can be stressed after a round of golf, as every swing of your club and even carrying your bag puts a compression load on the spine. If you are looking to reduce strain and help with your range of motion, Dr. Horowitz, who has extensive experience in treating sports injuries, is your best choice in Richmond Hill.
Call (905) 709-7147 today to keep smiling while you keep it in the fairway.
