WHEN IS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2024?
World Environment Day is observed on June 5 every year, first established by the UN in 1972. Outside of our homes is the actual home we all live in, and preserving it for future generations is more crucial than ever.
World Environment Day urges all of us to protect our natural surroundings. The stunning facts? An estimated 7 million people die each year from causes related to air pollution, with a majority occurring in the Asia-Pacific region. This day, which falls on June 5, encourages worldwide activism. That means everything from littering to climate change. World Environment Day is both a global celebration and a platform for public outreach.
This year, World Environment Day is being hosted by The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with a focus on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience. Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revive water sources, and bring back soils. We are the generation that can make peace with land.
The St. Mary's Green Team will be hosting a display table at St. Mary's Anglican Church on Sunday, June 9th @ 11:30 a.m. Please come by and see me to explore the various ways you can plug in and learn how you can play a part in restoring our valuable ecosystem.
World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.
