Knee Osteoarthritis (OA)
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis that results in a loss of cartilage between the bones. It can occur in young people but typically the chances of developing OA increases after the age of 45. Almost everyone will develop a certain degree of OA throughout their lifetime, but certain factors increase the risk of developing it an an earlier age. Some of the factors include gender, weight, genetic heredity, athletes, and repetitive knee injuries.

HOWEVER, knee OA can be managed conservatively through physiotherapy. A combination of supervised exercise and a home exercise program lead to the best results. Research has shown that exercise is proven to be effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in those that have knee OA. Frequent exercise strengthens the muscles that surround the knee joint thereby reducing the amount of pressure that goes into the knee joint itself. Stretching also helps to maintain range of motion and helps to lubricate the joints through simple movements.

Piriformis syndrome:
The piriformis muscle is located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint.
Pain tends to worsen after sitting for long periods. Pain is often worse at night and is eased somewhat in the morning by walking.

What causes piriformis muscle to flare up?
Repetitive movements or overuse such as occur with long distance running or walking can lead to inflammation or spasm of the piriformis muscle.

What is the function of piriformis muscle?
The piriformis muscle rotates the femur during hip extension and abducts the femur during flexion of the hip.

What exercises should patient avoid with piriformis syndrome?
Stop doing activities that cause pain such as running or bicycling, take a break to walk around and stretch if patient has to sit for long period of time.
