Last Saturday, we gathered to celebrate at The Ultimate Gala presented by #LiUNAOPDC and LIUNA Local 183. Through the generosity of our community, we raised $1.45M for Mackenzie Health’s highest priority needs.
Thank you to our donors, corporate partners, volunteers, physicians and staff for helping us provide the ultimate in health care to the residents of western York Region and beyond.

Donation Myth: All a hospital’s needs are met by government funding.
While governments provide significant funding for aspects such as construction and program delivery, needs such as new technologies, staff education and even medical equipment is the financial responsibility of the hospital.
We need donors like you to help us continue to deliver world-class health care close to home.

The Raptors are back for another action-packed season tonight and along with them fans, athletes and kids across the GTA will play their favourite game and emulate their favourite players. Unfortunately, some of these players experience injuries.
Our Dr. Wang, Orthopedic Surgeon, takes a moment with us to address some of the most common basketball injuries that he sees among his patients.
Good luck to our Raptors and to everyone playing this great game, stay safe and have fun.
Have you wondered when you should start speaking to your health care provider about breast cancer screening? Dr. Uy shares some important information for women when it comes to their breast health.
Do you ever wonder who prepares the tray of instruments for surgeons ahead of a surgery? Our Medical Device Reprocessing (MDR) team helps clean, assemble and sterilize surgical instruments and tools. This is vital for infection prevention, to ensure instruments are working properly and that our surgeons have the necessary tools they need.
“Our team plays an important role in providing safe and quality care to our patients,” says Jen, one of our medical device reprocessing team members. “Each month, we clean and prepare more than 106,000 instruments and supplies across both our hospitals to make sure that our colleagues in the operating rooms and clinics have what they need to successfully complete surgeries and procedures in a safe manner.
Thank you to the whole MDR team for everything that you do to support our care teams and to help keep our patients safe.

One of the most popular misconceptions about occupational therapy is that occupational therapists (OT) exclusively care for patients dealing with job-related disabilities. In reality, OTs are invaluable care team members who focus on a patient’s health and wellness as a whole. They deal directly with patients who are living with physical and mental conditions that reduce their ability to function. See how Kristie is providing the ultimate in health care as an Occupational Therapist in the Mental Health program at Mackenzie Health and about how she helps our mental health patients reintegrate into the community successfully.
Happy Anniversary to our incredible Mackenzie Health Volunteer Association!
At 60 years young, this group of selfless community members has helped shape both of our hospitals with an endless supply of care, compassion, dedication and commitment.
From experienced retirees to energetic students, the members of our volunteer association continue to serve as some of our greatest ambassadors providing support for those receiving care and engaging the community. We’re so proud of the thousands of volunteers that have dedicated their time over the past six decades and truly humbled by the help given and personal connections made with those that needed it most.
Thank you to all of our members past and present for everything you’ve done, everything you do and everything you will do.

We all love warm weather during the summer but prolonged exposure to the sun comes with risks. Dr. Amin, Emergency Department Physician at Mackenzie Health shares a few tips on how you can avoid sunburns and sunstrokes to prevent a visit to the Emergency Department this summer.
We celebrate World Breastfeeding Week with advice to new mothers from one of our lactation consultants, Amanda. Here are some of her suggestions and recommendations to help new moms as they adjust to feeding their babies:
1. Hold your baby skin-to-skin as much as possible for the first few days and weeks after birth. Skin-to-skin can help with:
✅ Breastfeeding
✅ Keeping your baby warm
✅ Reducing your baby’s crying and stress
✅ Regulating your baby’s blood sugar
✅ Bonding with your baby
Your partner can hold your baby skin-to-skin too!
2. Feeding your baby – watch the baby, not the clock. Look for your baby’s early signs of wanting to feed: squirming, licking their lips, rooting around in search of food, putting their hands in their mouth
3. Look for signs that your baby is getting enough breast milk by counting diapers. For example, on day one, expect at least one pee and one to two tarry poos called Meconium. On day two, expect at least two pees and one to two poos, and so on.
4. Milk production – the more your baby breastfeeds in the first few weeks, the more milk your body will make. Your baby will go through growth spurts in their first months. When these occur, your milk will change and increase to meet your baby’s needs.
5. Look after mom - in the early days, try to rest when your baby sleeps. Accept or ask for help with housework and meals from your partner, family and friends. Have visitors over only when you feel ready.
If you are having difficulty breastfeeding, find it painful or have any concerns, be sure to reach out and contact a Lactation Consultant for help!
