After decades since my dad's death, with the help of Acknowledge, Assess, Assist, I have made peace with my grief, softening to gratitude and compassion. Over the years after a loss, has your grief taken different forms -- are you acknowledging it?
I don't have to look farther than into my own life to understand how long grief can truly last. Recently, a quiet voice inside me spoke up: “I miss you, Dad.” I heard it—and I responded in my own Acknowledge, Assess, Assist moment. My father passed away 27 years ago, after spending his last fou...

In this blog post, I apply the 3-A Coping Framework: Acknowledge, Assess, Assist to explore 18 year old Victoria Mboko's ability to be resilient, focused and disciplined at the Canadian Open Tennis Final moving in one week up the rankings from 85 to 25. We can all learn from her coping power as she was able to come back from dropping the first set to her opponent Naomi Osaka. The 3-A Framework can be used in any challenging situation involving adversity and loss such as family caregiving, bereavement and job loss.
What does it take to be a winner? Just ask Victoria Mboko, the 18-year-old Canadian tennis sensation who defied the odds at the National Bank Open in Montreal. In a single week, she surged from world No. 85 to No. 25, defeating several top-ranked players to get crowned with the championship trophy.W...

Tough situations alter your life. As a social worker and coping strategist, I use methods of grief processing with mindfulness and cognitive reframing to help you cope through negative life altering situations. Acknowledge, Assess, Assist are the components of the 3-A Coping Framework I developed that houses these methods.

"While theorists, such as Sigmund Freud, have been interested in making the distinction between 'grief' and 'depression', my interest has been in emphasizing the similarity. I focus on addressing your specific reactions rather than labeling them as 'depression' or 'grief'. I address your reactions by applying the 3-A Coping Framework with the objective of empowering you so you can monitor yourself with awareness."
Assist by Acknowledging and Assessing the specific reaction is more telling than using grief and depression.

Eleanor Silverberg is the founder of Jade Self Development Coaching. She is a social worker and grief specialist, providing self-development coaching to help adults through adversity and situational loss - death, family illness, relationship breakdown, job, financial, loss of a pet or other life altering situation. Eleanor specializes in assisting those who are caring for aged parents and chronically ill family members, offering “A” tips to strengthen inner resiliency and prevent burnout. “A” tips are endorsed methods to help you cope as you self-monitor with self-awareness using the coping tool AcknowledgeAssessAssist. This 3-A Coping Framework involves Acknowledging the adverse circumstances of adversity and loss, Assessing the impact which include the reaction and what influences the reaction, and Assisting with strategies. Training is also offered to professionals on using the 3-A Coping Framework for intervention.
Eleanor has featured Acknowledge, Assess, Assist in her books “Caregiving with Strength” that is more academic and “Keeping It Together: How to Cope as a Family Caregiver without Losing Your Sanity” that is more hands on for family caregivers. Her third book “Mindfulness Exercises for Dementia” allowed Eleanor to combine her expertise in dementia, group facilitation and extensive training in mindfulness to create a modified mindfulness program, filling a gap so that people in the moderate stage of dementia can also benefit from mindful practice.
