Unfortunately, due to the government's inaction, Ontario optometrists are still under job action...2+months in. We had collectively done everything we could to first try and avoid this from even happening, but when it became reality, we have done and will continue to do everything we can to get the government to act.

We need your help. Call, email, visit your MPP to voice your concerns. Here is an official statement recently released but MPP Gila Martow, outlining the current situation very well. Optometrists honestly are trying to resolve this, while the Ministry of Health is only spreading lies. I want to thank you, my loyal patients, for your ongoing support. Let's get this over with ASAP!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We are closed through the whole long weekend. Back on Tuesday Oct 12 at 9am!

06/02/2021

While we always hope to be able to care for all our patients to the best of our abilities, the lack of fair and sustainable funding from the government makes it impossible for us to continue on.
Please visit our online petition to support us, your local optometrists.

Please note the office is closed throughout the long weekend! Returning Tues, May 25 at 9am. Have a fabulous holiday!

Dear Patients,
It is with great frustration and disappointment that Optometrists in Ontario need to fight this battle with the government in order to get proper funding for eye care. Unfortunately, if the government continues to neglect primary eye care in the province, OHIP-funded services will no longer be available to you starting Sept 1, 2021. Please visit saveeyecare.ca for more info, and to voice your concerns to your MPP and Minister of Health.

Ontario's optometrists are threatening to withhold services as part of a funding standoff. Plus, Amazon Prime is eyeing a huge potential addition to its movie library. Business Editor Richard Southern reports.

The Ontario Association of Optometrists said Tuesday it will suspend in September the services provided under OHIP for seniors, children and vulnerable populations unless the province revises its billing scheme and increases payments.

Today is - a great opportunity to recognize Ontario optometrists and everything they do to preserve and protect their patients eye health every single day.

It is also a chance to highlight the immense struggles they are facing.

For 30 yrs, previous governments neglected to invest in eye care. OHIP only covers 1/2 the cost of an eye exam, and Ontario optometrists have to subsidize the rest.

In addition, optometrists do not have a process to negotiate with government the way other health professions do.

To put it simply, eye care in Ontario is in crisis.

Optometrists play an essential role in helping you see your best. And now, you have a chance to help your optometrist too.

This , please take a moment to consider the future of eye care in Ontario. Visit https://saveeyecare.ca/ to send a letter to the Ontario government, asking them to invest in eye care.

While you visit the site, you also have the chance to read our member's stories on why they need change.

Dear Patients,

This is a long read, but thank you for your time.

While most of you have been very supportive of us optometrists, we understand that our current job action has been quite frustrating for some as you may face temporary difficulties to access our care. In the recent days, while most news outlets have stated factual reports of our situation, it is unfortunate that other outlets have painted us with such a negative brush. If we have had the privilege of caring for you in the past, I hope you guys have felt that we truly care a lot about each and every patient. We are optometrists because we love what we do. However, as much as we love it, we are not rich people who can afford to provide care at a loss for >75% of the time. We are your everyday, working wife/husband/parent/neighbour/small business owner. If the government's funding towards an OHIP-covered exam cannot even pay the minimum expenses/costs to provide that care (staff salaries, rent, equipment, licensing fees, etc), we face the real risk that we will close -- which means permanent loss of care to our patients.
How can the public empathize with the small business restaurant, hair salon, massage therapy clinic but not realize that our optometry clinic is no different? Just because we are considered doctors, we do not magically make a million dollars, and we do still deserve to bring home a fair income to our families.
If you expect your employer to provide you a wage increase on a reasonable basis to keep up with inflation -- I agree! You deserve it! So if the bulk of a clinic's "income" from services are from the government's funds, why can optometrists not expect that the government at least keep up with inflation and normal increased businesses costs (rent/taxes/staff wages) by increasing funds to us. Their claim? They HAVE increased funds to us...but that's collectively. Each individual patient is still being seen at the same reimbursed amount. It's just that the baby boomer age hit and suddenly there's been a surge in the proportion of patients who now fall in the 65years+ age group.

To put it into perspective... 30 years ago there were no computers, internet, automated machines in your eye doctor's office, and minimum wage was

May 25, 2020 UPDATE!
It has been an incredibly tough time for everyone. Thank you for your patience as we work through the government mandated closures, yet slowly prepare to re-open hopefully in the near future.

We are now temporarily staffed Mon to Fri 10am-1pm to assist you with your needs by phone and email. Outside of these office hours, please leave a detailed voicemail or email, and we will reply you the next business day. If you have an urgent eye problem that you feel cannot wait, please call Telehealth, a walk-in clinic, or present to the ER. Unfortunately, we are unable to care for new patients at this time, but will do so as soon as we have the ability to.

While we cannot provide routine in-person care yet, we are able to assist to an extent over the telephone. For example, we can refill eye drop prescriptions (such as allergy relief or ongoing glaucoma care), assist with home therapies, or direct you on how to further seek medical assistance. Call us for contact lens re-orders and the products can be shipped directly to your home.

A detailed outline of our precautions and changes will be posted soon, so stay tuned! Please understand that upon re-opening, there will be a new normal but this is all done to protect you and us. We want to make sure that the staff and doctors feel entirely safe at work, and that you and your family feel entirely safe coming in to see us.

Take care, stay safe, and stay tuned!

While most of us are staying home to help flatten the curve... most of us are still within reach!

***Call and leave a detailed voicemail, or email us!***

Most optometrist offices like ourselves may be closed, but we can still be reached to assist you in whatever way we can.

During these challenging times, we want to remind you that OAO Optometrists are still here to take care of your urgent eye and vision issues.

Help is available by telephone, email, by video conference, and in person when it’s necessary and safe to do so.

Optometrists who are not currently seeing patients will make necessary referrals for you to ensure you get the care you need.

Please contact your optometrist first. Your optometrist can speak with you over telephone or video-conference to assess your problem and determine how best to proceed.

If you do not have an optometrist, you can visit www.FindAnEyeDoctor.ca to locate one near you.

March 16, 2020 Update:

Due to increasing efforts to control the spread of COVID19 and to encourage social distancing, we are temporarily closing.

We have already contacted all patients who have scheduled appointments over the next two weeks to temporarily cancel their exams.

We are temporarily not accepting new patients.

Existing patients with concerns, please call and leave a detailed message, or email us. There will not be regular staff but we will make our greatest effort to arrange for any ocular emergencies to be addressed.

Regards,
Dr. Rosanna Chui, Dr. Jeff Lu, and Staff
